A Ceramic Vase, Marcello Fantoni Mark

Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011) was an Italian sculptor, ceramicist, metalworker, multi-media artist, and designer known for his versatility and innovation. He began studying ceramics at a young age in Florence and opened his own studio in 1936, where he produced unique pieces combining traditional Italian pottery techniques with modernist influences. His work received significant acclaim, blending rustic forms with African, marine, and modern motifs. After participating in the Italian resistance during WWII, Fantoni continued his work, incorporating Etruscan techniques and experimenting with various materials, including metals. In the 1950s and 1960s, he produced cubist-inspired and brutalist works, with his signature style of hand-painted pieces and sgraffito lines. In 1970, he founded the International School of Ceramic Art, influencing future generations of artisans. Fantoni's creations, marked by diverse shapes, textures, and his distinctive painting style, were exhibited worldwide and included in major museum collections. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 95, remembered as “The master of beauty.” 7.1/4 in. high, 4 in. wide.
