CANDIDO ARAGONESE (ARAGONEZ) DE FARIA (1849-1911) CROSS COUNTRY / PATHÉ FRÈRES. Circa 1909. 44¼x63 inches, 112½x160 cm. Affiches Faria, Paris. Condition A-: minor repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; slight time-staining in margins; reds slightly attenuated. Faria, a Brazilian caricaturist, painter, lithographer and poster designer, emigrated to France in 1882. In 1902, he created one of the first known cinema posters, for The Victims of Alcoholism. From 1902 until his death, he was the most prolific designer of posters for Pathé - completing around 300 - with titles such as Les Chiens Contrebandiers, L'Amant de la Lune, and Voyage Autour d'Une Étoile. Aside from his multitude of entertainment posters, he may be best recognized for his elegant and inviting winter and summer images for the Cachats-Majestic Hotel in Chamonix. The collective artwork that came out of his workshop posthumously was signed "Atelier Faria."

A French Art Nouveau style advertising lithograph art poster designed by Brazilian artist Candido Aragonese De Faria (1849-1911). Titled, "Le Gyroscope Humain," produced circa 1910 by Faria (Paris). A colorful French language figural work advertising the exhibitions of a performing inventor. Depicting a male figure balanced atop a mechanical device and suspended above a crowd of figures, with performer's face superimposed in an oblong window and legend MENN-RET CREATEUR. Artist signed in the plate to center left. French language printing details to lower right edge. Presented under glass in a museum quality frame with profuse gilding. Work Size: 81 x 50 in. ARTIST: CANDIDO ARAGONESE DE FARIA (1849-1911) SIZE: 62 x 46 5/8 in./157.5 x 118.5 cm PRINTER: Atelier Faria, Paris DESCRIPTION: De Faria offers us a busy view of a resort hotel in Chamonix at the height of its summer season, with a tennis threesome in the foreground. Faria was born in Brazil and had his art training in Rio. He worked on numerous theatrical productions there and launched two magazines before moving to Paris in 1882. His many show business posters helped immortalize such stars as Yvette Guilbert, and in 1901 he designed one of the first movie posters, for a Zola-inspired film called “The Victims of Alcoholism.” About the same year, he formed the atelier to which this poster and a companion winter scene (see PAI-XII, 207) are credited. It's likely that this poster was meant to announce the release—and perhaps even a performance—of the opus. The song was dedicated to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who reigned from 1890 to 1948. (Art Nouveau; Music)

Though that’s a contested claim, Balfa was a smart lady to market herself as such. Otherwise, little information exists on her life and work, aside from a few small newspaper mentions. In 1896, L’Art Lyrique et le Music-Hall wrote of her performance at the Trocadero, “Mlle Fernande Balfa has a lovely light singer's voice and is accompanied very nicely on a harp; she details delightfully ‘Little Brunette with soft eyes,’ each verse of which was punctuated by thunders of bravos.” This is a two-sheet poster. Despite his "high precision shooting" in this "bold and sensational novelty," it sounds like an incredibly dangerous act, which is perhaps why we haven't found any information on Kook. De Faria gives us an explosive scene with two perspectives of the cowboy shooter and text in English and French. (Art Nouveau; Wild West)

Despite his "high precision shooting" in this "bold and sensational novelty," it sounds like an incredibly dangerous act, which is perhaps why we haven't found any information on Kook. Delanchy, Paris DESCRIPTION: De Faria has certainly left us few clues to solve this poster mystery, so we'll have to take a gamble. This "queen of virtuosos" is likely Friederike Sophie Wilhelmine, Princess of Prussia. Born in Berlin in 1709, she suffered an abusive childhood but found solace in music; she became an accomplished lutenist and composer, as evidenced here. But what, exactly, was de Faria advertising? Perhaps a theatre production or performance of her works? The case is still open, so let us know if you have any insight. (Art Nouveau; Music)

But de Faria does a fantastic job of giving us a veritable survey of all sorts of dogs vying for best in show: sporting breeds, hounds, working dogs, terriers, and toys. ARTIST: CÂNDIDO ARAGONESE DE FARIA (1849-1911) SIZE: 23 1/2 x 31 1/4 in./59.8 x 79.5 cm PRINTER: Affiches Faria, Paris DESCRIPTION: Blanche Allarty was destined to a luminous riding career: she grew up surrounded by horses thanks to her father, an amateur horseman; at 13, she took up riding lessons with Ernest Molier, who was known as the "Centaur" for his equine mastery. Molier immediately recognized her skill and passion, and invited her to perform at his Cirque Molier, which led to further traveling shows for the young star. After a performance in New York, the press and spectators dubbed her the "Centauress," a fitting nickname for the pupiland later wifeof the Centaur. Here, Faria exhibits one of her famous feats, accomplished with the cool confidence of a woman born to ride. (Circus; Animals)

At the beginning of the colonial era, advertising exercises the possibility of human miscegenation with this dubious association. The poster, 'The Curious Offspring of a Borneo Negress and a Representative of the Simian Species,' is the brainchild of the Brazilian master of caricature, Cândido de Faria, who came to Paris in 1882. Black and monkey put side by side in insets openly show their proximity.
