Alexandre Fasini (1892 - 1942) oil on canvas painting, Still life of fruit. Signed lower right. Provenance: Bonhams Knightsbridge, British and European Art, including works from L'Ecole de Paris, The Jewish Artists, 11/10/2021, lot 58. Note: Alexandre Fasini grew up in a family of grain merchants. Fasini spent his childhood in Odessa and attended the School of Fine Arts where he took classes taught by the Greek Impressionist Kiriak Kostandi. He became friends with artist Philippe Hosiasson and writer Isaac Babel, and drew illustrations for Odessa newspapers including Bomba and Yablochko. In 1922, he traveled to France on a Soviet ship, and established his residence at rue Daru in Montparnasse, Paris. Practicing between the genres of abstraction and surrealism, Fasini sought for an original artistic expression that would distinguish his position within the School of Paris. Max Berger, owner of the Galerie Vavin, exhibited Fasini's work for two years alongside Jean Lurçat, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Papazoff. During the Vel d'Hiv roundup in 1942, he was arrested by the French police and his work was destroyed in his studio. Fasini was interned in Drancy and died tragically in Auschwitz.

Alexandre Fasini (Ukrainian, 1892-1942), an oil on canvas painting titled: "Les Geometres." Signed 'A. Fasini / 930' (lower right). The composition is divided in two parts, with abstract human figures on the left side and geometric figures on the right side. Note: Alexandre Fasini grew up in a family of grain merchants. He was very young when his mother died. He was one of three brothers, of whom another also became a painter and one was a writer who died young. Fasini spent his childhood in Odessa. He attended the School of Fine Arts and took classes taught by the Greek Impressionist painter Kiriak Kostandi. He became friends with painter Philippe Hosiasson and writer Isaac Babel, and did illustrations for some Odessa newspapers, including Bomba and Iablstchko. He arrived in France aboard a Soviet boat in 1922 and settled in Rue Daru. Fasini’s painting was on the fringes of abstraction and Surrealism. He wished for its work to reflect a new experience, giving him an original position within the School of Paris. He became quite famous in the years 1920-1925. Max Berger, owner of the Galerie Vavin, exhibited his work for two years along with paintings by Jean Lurçat, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Papazoff. Alexandre Fasini collected primitive art. He also took up photography and furniture-making. During the Occupation, he continued painting. His friends and family advised him to leave for the Zone Libre (free zone) but he was too distressed to do so. On July 16, 1942, the French police arrested Fasini and his wife Rosa during the Vel d’Hiv roundup. His work was destroyed in his studio. Both of them were interned in Drancy and deported on convoy number 9. They were murdered in Auschwitz.

Acquis en 1974 par le père de la propriétaire actuelle. 12 000 - 18 000 € Né à Kiev et mort en déportation à Auschwitz en 1942, le peintre Alexandre Fasini étudia les Beaux-Arts à l’Académie d’Odessa, auprès du peintre impressionniste Kostandi, et s’installa à Paris en 1922. En 1926, à Paris, il expose au salon d’Automne, puis en 1927 aux Indépendants. Il est invité, la même année, toujours à Paris, à participer au Salon des Tuileries. Egalement photographe, ses clichés seront exposés à l’Exposition Internationale de Paris en 1937. La Galerie Vavin le représentera aux côté de grands maîtres tels que Picasso, Lurçat et Papazoff. La peinture de Fasini, marquée par un désir d’expérimentations nouvelles de compositions et de matières, comme le sable dont il se sert dans notre “Paysage Métaphysique” présenté ici à la vente, lui confère une place à part au sein de l’Ecole de Paris. Probablement inspiré de son contemporain Giorgio de Chirico, Alexandre Fasini s’éloigne cependant des formes figuratives pour utiliser le trait minimaliste et l’aplat de couleur, notamment dans l’oeuvre “Obélisque” que nous présentons à la vente, dont la composition rejoint presque l’abstraction.
