Oil painting "Girl from Bavaria" by Hans Fechner jun., 1884

      Est: €960 - €1,200

Oil on canvas Germany, 1884 Hans Fechner (1860-1931) - German interior and portrait painter Signed and dated lower left Elaborately reticulated wooden frame Overall dimensions: 73 x 63 cm Good condition This fine portrait by Hans Fechner shows a beautiful young girl in the typical Upper Bavarian garb. She wears a wide white blouse with a small quilled collar underneath her green-red Dirndl. A narrow hat, adorned with a green band, is placed on her head. Her face is framed by small, brown curls whereas the rest of her long hair is plaited and twined to a knot in her neck. Fechner shows the girl from the side so that her smiling profile with the opened mouth and the friendly, smiley eye is displayed. Her head is positioned right in the middle of the canvas and is beautifully framed through the green of the headband, the dirndl and the background in the lower parts of the painting. The white of the blouse's sleeve forms a good counterbalance to the light areas of her face. The painting is exceptionally beautifully done and equally harmonically composed. There exist many prints with drawings to this painting; some of them inscribed "Girl from Upper Bavaria". The painting is mostly in very good condition. Only on one patch in the canvas (in the white sleeve) a hole can be seen. Crazing is also noticeable. The elaborate and beautiful wooden frame is partly broken and repaired, although there is still material loss here and there. The overall dimensions including the frame are 73 x 63 cm, the dimensions of the canvas measure 49 x 39 cm. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left "Hans Fechner Jun. Fec. Febr. 84". Hans (a Hanns oder Johannes) Fechner (1860-1931) Fechner was a painter from Berlin who studied there at the Academy of Arts between 1877-1883. He then went to Munich to do further studies as the master student of Defregger. In 1892 he returned to Berlin to be named Professor and conservator at the print room (Kupferstichkabinett) in Berlin. He exhibited more than once at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy in Berlin and the Great Art Exhibition Berlin between 1883 and 1903. With portraits of nearly all the important people in Berlin, including Theodor Fontane, Virchow and the Emperor, he became famous during his lifetime. He suffered from an unidentified disease that ruined his eyesight around 1910/15 which forced him to end his painting. He turned towards writing and luckily became a successful author. Still, he is more known for his paintings, some of which can nowadays be seen at the Märkische Museum in Berlin, the Städtischen Galerie in Braunschweig and the collection of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
