Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler, The "Olbers" at Sea near Helgoland

        Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Like the previous lot, this painting is a ship portrait by Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler. Although unsigned, this work - showing the three masted sailing ship "Olbers" flying the flag of Bremen off the coast of Helgoland - can doubtlessly be included in this artist's oeuvre, which includes many such unsigned works.

Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler, The "Georg Delius" at Sea

        Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Signed and dated lower right: CJ Fedeler 1841In his later period, Fedeler exclusively painted ship portraits. The works were popular even during his lifetime among his patrons in Bremen and Bremerhaven, and the demand for these depictions of historical ships remains undamped among fans and admirers of German maritime history to this day. Fedeler's output of signed works increased greatly after the mid-1830s and his career appears to have ended around the year 1850. His son Carl (Justus) Fedeler (1837-1897) also primarily painted ships, but generally signed using his first name (C. Fedeler). The present work shows the two-masted vessel “Georg Delius” flying the red and white flag of Bremen in choppy waters.

Carl Justus Harmen Fedeler (German/ American, 1799-1858) KRONPRINZESSIN VON HANOVER WHALING IN THE SOUTH SEAS Signed, dated and inscribed lower right "CJH Fedeler/ pinx 1843" Inscribed on the stretcher EIGENTHUM JM. D. KONIGIN preceeded with a cypher oil on canvas In original frame branded with royal cypher 25 x 36 in. Provenance: Fidecommiss Galerie Royal House of Hanover Literature: Wilson, Timothy, Flags at Sea, p. 70, Plate viii, (for an early Victorian issue of Laurie's flag sheet depicting Kingdom of Hanover civil ensign 1801-1866 as it appears in portrait of Kronprinzessin von Hanover. Other Notes: Kronprinzessin von Hanover was built in 1843 for C. B. Ulrichs's Hannoversche - Sudsee - Fischerei - Compagnie and named for Victoria Adelaide Mary, Princess Royal, first child of Queen Victoria of England and, of course, Hanover. At the time she was built, Bremen was the second busiest whaling port in Europe after London. However, the trade went into sudden precipitous decline soon after she sailed on her first voyage as evidenced by the fate of the Bremen, another whaler built in the same year for the C. B. Ulrichs firm. In 1847 Bremen became an emigrant packet on the Bremerhaven to New York route. Fedeler executed Kronprinzessin's portrait before she even sailed. Based on hindsight his characterization of how things would be upon the arrival of the princess on the whaling grounds was wishful thinking. Fedeler painted an idealized whaler's "wish list." The tableau presents a perfect day off a tropical volcanic isle - perhaps one of the Hawaiian Islands - a perfect day for the hunt. To the right is Right whale spouting blood-named because it was the "right" whale to hunt. It was, at least by comparison with other whales, easy to kill, non-aggressive, rich in both baleen and oil, and above all, the carcass often floated. To the left a soon to be harpooned Sperm whale, aggressive and hard to kill, but it yields a very high quality oil along with spermaceti and ambergris is almost whimsically making eye contact with the viewer. Fedeler takes artistic license with time and space as the whaling grounds for the two species are mutually exclusive. Sperm whales are mainly found in tropical and temperate waters where as the Right whale thrives in the cold water currents of the North Pacific. As a result most whalers spent the northern summer in the Pacific Arctic hunting Right whales and Bowheads, and the Austral summer in the south Pacific hunting Sperm whales. When Fedeler painted his rosey view of Kronprinzessin von Hanover Whaling in the South Seas he would never have forseen that world wide whaling, booming in 1843, would for all practical purposes be out of business shortly after the discovery of oil in 1859.
