Phase, Tafel A, 1993, on the reverse titled, signed, dated Federle 93, acrylic on aluminum, 70 x 100 cm Provenance: Galerie nächst St. Stephan, Vienna Private collection, Austria Private collection, France Exhibited/Literature: Galerie nächst St. Stephan, Vienna, 1993 Kunstmuseum Bonn, 12 October 1995 – 21 January 1996, Düsseldorf 1995, p. 82/83, exhib. cat. with color illustration on p. 83 The Swiss artist Helmut Federle currently lives and works in Vienna. At the end of the 1950s, he began to create geometric-abstract works based on a minimalist, reduced surface design. A decade later, his work is definitively characterised by a strictly geometric formal language. His works show geometric forms and their position and balance in the pictorial plane. The artist himself does not see his work as belonging to any category, but above all as a spiritual search for meaning. In the aluminium work of the ‘Null Bild’ Series, 2nd Phase, Panel A from 1993, the artist harks back to his paintings of the late 1970s, not least through its dimensions. Federle anchors "upright or transverse rectangular anthracite-coloured fields to the opposite corners of the picture, with a dark grey surface acting as a foil." (Kunstmuseum Bonn, Bonn, 12 October 1995 - 21 January 1996, Düsseldorf 1995, p. 82). Panel A shows a reclining, resting light grey surface in the lower right corner of the picture against a charcoal grey, darker background. "In the Null-Bild works, the preoccupation with the Black Series is resonant, with the difference that processual events are once again concentrated on the individual image." (Ibid.)

With the work number 'INV. # 272' verso on stretcher.''In the year 2000 Helmut Federle produced a group of 26 small format paintings, which with the unusual title Für die Vögel (For the Birds), identified themselves as a new work group. All 26 pictures have a copper or gold-coloured painted ground, onto which Federle applied black or dark brown paint creating varied abstract-geometric areas. Each one of his paintings is assigned a letter of the alphabet, from A to Z. […] The different compositions of the picture series Für die Vögel do not illustrate the respectively allocated letter, and in this free setting of the artistic composition of the individual picture as well as the work group, there manifests itself that which was initially described as a dream of the painter: the independent transformation of the painterly-pictorial language into its own visual value. The letters are only a pretext for a series which, like the birds, disappears. The alphabet of the free flight obeys an autonomous pictorial legality.'' There is a small tear to the upper left margin; the lower right corner has been reattached and strengthened on the reverse. The dimensions are 29.5 x 21 cm. Helmut Federle (b. 1944) Federle grew up in St. Margrethen in the Canton of St. Gallen. In 1959 he started to paint. In the 1960s, he studied at the general trade school in Basel, among others in the painting class of Franz Fedier. In the 1970s, he traveled to Tunis and the USA and was inspired by the work of Mark Rothko and Agnes Martin. From 1979 to 1980, he lived in New York, followed by stays in Zurich, Reykjavik and Vienna. From 1999 to 2007, he was a professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Federle took part in the 47th Venice Biennial. Permanent installations by the artist can be found at the Paul-Löbe-Haus in Berlin, and the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, among others.
