Attributed to THOMÁS FEDRIANI Y RAMÍREZ (Cádiz, second third of the 19th century). “Country party at dusk”. Oil on canvas.

      Est: €1,500 - €2,000

Attributed to THOMÁS FEDRIANI Y RAMÍREZ (Cádiz, second third of the 19th century). "Country party at dusk". Oil on canvas. Size: 75 x 103 cm. Due to the political situation in Spain in the 19th century, the country had become a destination considered exotic and dangerous. Foreign literature helped to consolidate and mythologise this vision, as can be seen in Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra. Painting also subscribed to this movement, in which bandits were presented as legendary protagonists who fitted in perfectly with the Romantic ideal of the solitary man. This image is a clear example of these trends, with the main character riding his horse with his back to the viewer, contemplating the mountains and the people who inhabit them in the semi-darkness. The new 19th-century genre of genre painting was born as a way of interpreting a growing sense of national consciousness, now present in the middle classes as they moved towards social hegemony. To a certain extent, the painters' concern was to deepen the vision of their country through a language, that of painting, which everyone could understand, thus helping the common people to understand the nature and meaning of their nationality, especially as it had manifested itself in the recent past, still vivid in the memory of the elders. Of the two fundamental costumbrista schools of 19th-century Spain, the Sevillian and Madrid schools, the latter differs from the gentle picturesqueness of the former in its more pungent and harsh vision, sometimes going so far as to depict not only the vulgar, but even indulging in heart-rending visions of a clichéd world of the working class, in which the spirit of criticism is evident.

THOMÁS FEDRIANI Y RAMÍREZ (Cádiz, second third of the 19th century). "Landscape", 1853. Oil on canvas. With restorations. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 75 x 103 cm. The landscape dominates this work, which is populated by different characters arranged in groups. All of them are carrying out tasks of popular character; a woman washes the clothes in the river, another one makes the food, and others are enjoying the music, and the dance of a girl who plays the castanets. The work shows an idyllic scene, where the figures, due to their small size, lose a certain prominence with respect to the landscape, which covers the whole of the pictorial surface. The landscape is defined by a mountain range in the background and vegetation reminiscent of the Andalusian mountains. The scene is conceived in the manner of a print, as if the artist were trying to capture a specific moment capable of defining specific customs and culture.
