His parents, Carl Fehrer and Catharine Thomann, were immigrants from Vienna who met and married in New York in 1863.As a boy Oscar attended the Brooklyn public schools and later, as a young man, he studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. In 1892 he entered the National Academy of Design in New York City and remained there for three years.Fehrer went to Munich in 1895 to study at the Royal Academy and the University of Munich. He went to the Academy Julian in Paris for one year, studying at the Rue du Dragon branch under Laurens and Constant.Fehrer had a studio on 22nd Street in New York City by 1900 and, in 1905, he married Mabel E. Vanderbilt. The newlyweds went to Holland and then to Spain before settling in Munich in 1910. WWI brought them back to New York and Fehrer continued painting portraits and landscapes. BIOGRAPHY: Oscar Fehrer - portrait and landscape painter - was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 21,1872 and died in New York City on September 11, 1958. His parents, Carl Fehrer and Catharine Thomann, were immigrants from Vienna who met and married in New York in 1863.As a boy Oscar attended the Brooklyn public schools and later, as a young man, he studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. In 1892 he entered the National Academy of Design in New York City and remained there for three years.Fehrer went to Munich in 1895 to study at the Royal Academy and the University of Munich. He went to the Academy Julian in Paris for one year, studying at the Rue du Dragon branch under Laurens and Constant.Fehrer had a studio on 22nd Street in New York City by 1900 and, in 1905, he married Mabel E. Vanderbilt. The newlyweds went to Holland and then to Spain before settling in Munich in 1910. WWI brought them back to New York and Fehrer continued painting portraits and landscapes. His address for 1929 was in care of the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park, New York City.Fehrer was living in Lyme, CT in 1929 and 1934.In 1903, Fehrer became a life member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City. He was also a member of the Allied Artists of America in New York City; the Brooklyn Painters and Sculptors; the Brooklyn Society of Artists; the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; the Springfield Artists' League; and, in 1915, he was elected a life member of the National Arts Club in New York City.Exhibitions and awards include an honorable mention at the Rue du Dragon; a medal at the National Academy of Design; Vanderpoel College; the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, CT; Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT; and Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.Collections representing Oscar Fehrer include the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; Harvard University in Cambridge, MA; Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ; the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London, CT.; and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT.
