FELDMANN, HANS-PETER Düsseldorf 1941 - 2023 Title: Untitled. Date: 2001. Technique: Suitcase, broom and broom handle, sawn into 4 pieces. Measurement: Suitcase: 15 x 45 x 28cm, broom (in total):128 x 32 x 8,5cm. The work is a wedding gift from Hans-Peter Feldmann to Barbara Weiss and Kasper König. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from artist) Exhibitions: - Gallery Thomas Fischer, Berlin 2018 Every time I do something, then it's a kind of liberation. And of course, the reactions I get are a form of acknowledgement. Maybe public presentation is part of what makes the therapy effective. -Hans-Peter Feldmann Hans-Peter Feldmann has been collecting, archiving and arranging found everyday objects and photographs since the late 1960s, which he documented in his series "Bilderhefte" (1968-75). As a pioneer of Appropriation Art, he influenced the young generation of artists of the 1990s. By using and combining objects that he removed from their contexts, he declared "non-art to be art". Even if Feldmann never wants to be perceived as an artist, his artistic oeuvre is unassailable. His conceptual art is not intended to provoke, politicize or intellectualize, but rather to show us what we believe to be familiar in a new light. I think there are universal aspects in [Feldmann's] ouvre that are rendered understandable by [his] very everyday use of media which for a long time were not associated with art. At the moment of course, this is being integrated or coopted. For a long time, it was only noticed by other artists or people with a deep interest. -Kasper König Hans-Peter Feldmann and Kasper König have been friends for many years, regularly participating in joint projects, publications and artist talks. After a break in 1980, when Feldmann put an end to his work, he devoted himself entirely to his Düsseldorf store and found his way back to art through König's encouragement. König visited him in his store to persuade him to take part in a Portikus exhibition. König's students would not have believed that Feldmann was an "old man". At Portikus in 1989, Feldmann amazed the public with the exhibition " Das Museum im Kopf (The Museum in the Head)", in which he tested the reproducibility of art. Feldmann at the Museum Ludwig At the Museum Ludwig, König dedicates an entire cabinet to Feldmann. A solo exhibition entitled " Kunstausstellung" (Art Exhibition) took place in 2003. Since then, the Museum Ludwig has owned the artist's most extensive collection. In 2006, Feldmann and König caused a sensation with the "David" statue based on Michelangelo's model, which was installed at Cologne Cathedral as part of the exhibition " Das Achte Feld". Due to its connection to the exhibition, which is dedicated to topics such as queerness and gender identity, the "David" is considered a symbol of the Pride movement. By positioning it at the cathedral, however, the two do not intend to criticize the church and religion in relation to same-sex love in any way, but rather to interpret the sculpture as a sign of longing and homesickness. The statue's distant gaze is also an allusion to the Italian migrant workers who, as König explains, went to the main station after work to watch the trains back home. It took Kasper König four attempts to finally convince Feldmann to participate in "Skulptur Projekte Münster" in 2007. Feldmann's contribution was to adapt the public toilets on Cathedral Square to the standards of airports and hotels. Suitcase, broom, broomstick In the untitled work from 2001, Feldmann confronts the viewer with his pragmatic, direct approach. It is a new but sawn-up broom, the individual parts of which are neatly arranged and separated from each other in a suitcase. True to the motto: "What doesn't fit will be made to fit!", Feldmann manipulates the broom in order to adapt it to the dimensions of the suitcase. By dividing up the object and combining it with a suitcase in a seemingly arbitrary way, Feldmann not only succeeds in questioning the actual intention of the materials used, but also in redefining them. Bringing familiar material together in simple groupings and thus undermining the audience's expectations through minimal but effective intervention, testing it against socially established thought patterns and rigid definitions, is a recurring core subject of his oeuvre. HANS-PETER FELDMANN Untitled (David).

            Est: $5,000 - $8,000

HANS-PETER FELDMANN Untitled (David). Painted plaster multiple, 1990. 430x254x127 mm; 17x10x5 inches. Edition of 18. Provenance: Johnen & Schöttle, Cologne; private collection, New York. Feldmann (1941-2023) was a German visual artist, a figure in the conceptual art movement and practitioner in the artist book and multiple formats, known in particular for his appropriation of famous artistic images. Among his most recognized appropriations, which he developed through numerous different painted plaster multiples, including the current version, a similar bust version published by the Edition Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf, and a full length version, is that of Michelangelo's marble David sculpture. In the 1980s, the artist withdrew from the world of art in response to the increasing importance of money in the artistic sphere. He returned to art in the 1990s and chose to produce unlimited editions of works, which he no longer signed, thereby challenging the traditional codes and norms of the art market. According to The New Yorker which reviewed Feldmann's exhibition at 303 Gallery, New York, September 15-October 29, 2016, "When the German artist won the Guggenheim's Hugo Boss Prize, in 2010, he used his prize money—a hundred thousand dollars—to paper the walls of the subsequent exhibition with one-dollar bills. You'll find the same wry humor and preoccupation with display in this winning show of found paintings, some of which have been playfully doctored. Aristocratic Prussians now sport red clown noses or heavy-metal tattoos; nudes seen from behind include a creditable copy of Ingres's Valpinçon Bather alongside garage-sale pinups; choppy seascapes might have been made en plein air or churned out for hotel décor. (Most of the paintings are suspended from wires, and their versos disclose which are vintage and which, such as a Venus of Urbino with a bikini tan, are not.) What makes Feldmann's installation more than a jape is his evident passion for the history of art: he's like a pining teen-ager who mocks his desire because he can't bring himself to say he's in love."

Feldmann, Hans-Peter. 12 pornographische Fotografien. 9 x 13 cm (Quer- und Hochformat). Lose mit einem xerographierten Begleitschreiben. 1975. -- Feldmann, 272 pages, S. 90 m. Abb.

« Of all collections in this vein -and it is a popular genre of artists’ books- Feldmann’s are the most deadpan, the least expressive. We are asked to look at them simply as Bilder, as pictures- pictures of anything, it doesn’t matter, they could even be a flat overall grey or black and serve Feldmann’s purpose. We demand all sorts of things from photographic images, which all too often give us little except reflections of ourselves. In the Bilder books, Feldmann is essentially saying that all photographers are mirrors, and only tell us what we want to know ».

HANS-PETER FELDMANN (°1941) 'Eine Stad: Essen' Essen, Museum Folkwang, 1977. Small in-8°. 172 pp. Orig. yellow wrappers. Feldmann spent a period of over six weeks in Essen and the surrounding Ruhr district, travelling by car and taking hundreds of black-and-white photographs. As usual Feldmann did not select any spectacular images for the 318 photographs used in the book. Instead, we are presented with blurred photographs, overcast images that reflect the artist’s reality: nondescript housing blocks, disjointed views of parked cars, empty fields, electricity pylons, randomly angled close-ups, and other general scenes of mundanity. Hans-Peter Feldmann, Untitled, Around 2012

            Est: €55,000 - €60,000

In his oeuvre, Peter Feldmann refers to the perception and status of art and its relationship to society. One method he developed for this is to disband the exalted character of works of art through minor interventions. In paintings of the old masters, he makes the depicted subjects squint, for example, or he anonymises them by painting black bars over their eyes. In the present work, he reworks two old masters' portraits by embellishing the subjects with red clown's noses. Hereby, apart from the humoristic aspect of the initial impression, the artist playfully refers to the traditions of Western art and challenges their value by trivialising them. As in the case of all the painter's works, this diptych also remains unsigned. In this way, Hans-Peter Feldmann expresses his disapproval of the artistic genius cult and raises the issue of originality and authorship.“Because he transgresses the boundaries set by art categories, Feldmann's work, when correlated with the art world, gains a greater meaning in its banal and unpretentious objecthood. It suggests not only the interpretation of the artwork but also raises the question of the artwork's essence”. (Helena Tatay (ed.), 272 Pages, in: exhib.cat. Fundacio Antoni Tapies i.a., Barcelona 2001, p.284).
