      HUGO FELDTMANN (DATES UNKNOWN) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN. Circa 1930. 34x24 inches, 86 1/2x61 cm. Wilhm Jontzen, Bremen. Condition B+: minor restored losses, tears, creases, slight discoloration and restoration at edges. The sister ships Bremen and Europa were launched in 1929 and 1930, respectively. In her first year, the Bremen regained the highly vaunted Blue Ribband, for the ship that made the fastest Atlantic crossing. The sister ships, along with a third vessel, Columbus, were often depicted in attractive Art Deco posters. Little is known about Feldtmann except for a large number of posters he designed for the German shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen. This is the French version. Weallans p. 125.

      Artist: HUGO FELDTMANN Size: 23 3/4 x 40 1/2 in./60.5 x 102.8 cm Wilhelm Jontzen, Bremen All appears bright in this poster for the Norddeutscher Lloyd Bremen Line, but it is difficult not to notice the Nazi flags flying at the bow of all three vessels. Founded in 1857, the company was nearly sunk after World War I; its ships, which took refuge in U.S. ports, were seized for reparations. To rebuild its fleet, NDL chartered ships from the U.S. After losing their fleet again in World War II, they merged in 1970 with the Hamburg America Line to become HAPAG-Lloyd. (Ships; Travel)

      HUGO FELDTMANN (DATES UNKNOWN) NORDDEUTSCHER LLOYD BREMEN / FAR EAST EXPRESS. Circa 1937. 33x23 1/2 inches, 84x60 cm. Wilh M. Jontzen, Bremen. Condition A / A-: minor tears at edges. Paper. Three sister ships launched in 1935, the Gneisenau, Potsdam and Scharnhorst all served the Bremen-Genoa-via Suez Canal-Shanghai route. Here with a touch of Japonisme, Feldtmann depicts the ships cruising behind the branch of a tree ladened with sparrows. Only the Potsdam survived the Second World War, remaining in service with the P & O Line and then the Pan-Islamic Steamship Company until 1976.
