          Jack Fellows (B. 1941) "1964 Boeing 747 B"

          Est: $100 - $1,000

Jack Fellows (American, B. 1941) "1964 Boeing 747 B" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Boeing 747b from the 100 Year of Powered Flight Collection. The Boeing 747 is undoubtedly the most important airliner in history and has helped revolutionize the world of air transportation. Like many Boeing commercial products, the 747 was a tremendous gamble, but this one was shared by Pan American World Airways. The new airliner required an entirely new factory to be built, the largest in the world under one-roof, and construction of the first Boeing 747 began even before the factory was completed. The new aircraft, with its huge gross take-off weight, long range and large, up to 450 passenger capacity, dwarfed all previous airliners in size - and in performance. Priced at almost $17,000,000 in 1966, the 747 caused airline executives to wince, because they knew that they had to buy them to stay competitive. Image Size: 16.5 x 14 in. Overall Size: 18 x 16.5 in. Unframed. (B17247)

As an artistic counterpoint to Jack's military history illustrations, is his work as a fine art painter, focusing on figurative and landscape subjects, and occasionally, maritime subjects. Above all else, he favors the opportunity to paint landscape subjects in Europe, particularly around the Mediterranean. He has been invited to show his landscape work at the prestigious Peppertree Ranch Art Show in California, May, 2004. Jack's work has been widely collected, in the United States and abroad, in museum collections, and by private collectors. He has won many awards, over the years, most recently, the R.G. Smith Award for Excellence in Naval Aviation Art (2004), and is the originator and primary financial backer of the Capt. Duane Whitney Martin-Vietnam Airwar Award for Artistic Excellence, awarded annually by the American Society of Aviation Artists. He was president of the American Society of Aviation Artists 1995-97, is a Life Member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters, a member of the USAF Art Program, and guest lecturer, Museum of Flight-Visiting Aviator Series. He has approximately one-hundred postage-stamp designs to his credit and most of his work is available, published in a variety of formats, in both open and limited edition.

His intense interest in the history of the air war in the Pacific led to his origination of the Cactus Air Force Art Project, dedicated to the collecting and archiving of historical data relating to that period. Most of his work today illustrates military aviation in the Pacific. "Jack is, in my opinion, the foremost artist in the world doing Pacific WWII aviation art." Larry J. Hickey, Pres. International Research & Publishing Corp, Dec. 16, 2003. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Lockheed Vega stamp issued July 19, 1997. Using part-owner Jack Northrop's novel design, the new Lockheed company unveiled its streamlined Vega on July 4, 1927. Considered to be the most streamlined plane ever built, the four-passenger, high-wing monoplane could cruise at 135 mph. The plane's speed was later increased to 155 mph by enclosing the radial Pratt & Whitney Wasp engine in a smooth metal cowl. Even though it was never widely used by the commercial airlines, the Vega was made famous by former airmail pilot Wiley Post, who named his Vega "Winnie Mae" and flew it around the world in 1931 . . . and by Amelia Earhart, who flew her Vega nonstop across the Atlantic in 1932. Most of his work today illustrates military aviation in the Pacific. "Jack is, in my opinion, the foremost artist in the world doing Pacific WWII aviation art." Larry J. Hickey, Pres. International Research & Publishing Corp, Dec. 16, 2003.

BIOGRAPHY: Jack's career as a practicing professional artist spans a period of over thirty-five years, both as a commercial artist and a fine art painter. 16, 2003.
