        Mar. 20, 2022

Marmorhaus / Der Teufel und die Circe. 1921.

        Est: $3,500 - $4,000

ARTIST: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) SIZE: 37 x 28 1/8 in./94 x 71.5 cm PRINTER: Dinse & Eckert, Berlin DESCRIPTION: Fenneker, an important German Expressionist artist in 1920s Berlin, became the eye of the cultural and political hurricane that was Weimar Germany. There is a foreboding of gathering storms in almost all his work. Fenneker designed numerous film posters between 1910 and 1924 for two major Berlin movie palaces, most notably the Marmorhaus, the paramount cinema of Germany. A combination of Radio City Music Hall and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, any film premiering there gained instant prestige. Thus, Fenneker’s position was not that of just another movie poster designer, but the film posterist of his day, in whose hands the art of the film poster arguably reached its zenith. As these Marmorhaus posters were produced specifically for a single venue, the print runs were very limited and all of these designs are therefore today quite rare. As “The Devil and Circe” was an independent film produced outside the embrace of the mighty UFA, the plot of this gem is nonexistent. However, the image of the chivalrous Lucifer draping this brazen temptress proves to be as luring as the mythological Greek siren was to Ulysses’ sailors. (Art Deco; German)

JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956). LUNA - PARK / HALENSEE. Circa 1920. 55x36 inches, 139¾x91½ cm. Dinse & Eckert, Berlin.

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) LUNA - PARK / HALENSEE. Circa 1920. 55x36 inches, 139 3/4x91 1/2 cm. Dinse & Eckert, Berlin. Condition B+: expertly-repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases in margins and along horizontal fold; colors attenuated. Framed. Fenneker's recognizable style - most famously seen in over 300 movie poster designs - drew largely on German Expressionism combined with a flair of aesthetic decadence. Here, he presents a dramatic view of Berlin's Luna-Park amusement park, in operation from 1909 to 1933. He designed at least four other alluring posters for the park, each with a glamorous couple against a dark background to emphasize the glow of the pink, yellow and teal details.

      • Gitta Entdeckt Ihr Herz. 1932.

        Gitta Entdeckt Ihr Herz. 1932.

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ARTIST: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) SIZE: 37 5/8 x 56 in./95.8 x 142.6 cm PRINTER: Paul Grasnick, Berlin DESCRIPTION: This poster shows a sharp departure from Fenneker's haunting and expressionistic designs of the 1910s and 1920s. This could be due to the growing conservatism of both Berlin and the film industry; in 1920, Germany passed a cinema censorship law and each poster had to be approved by the censor's office. Nevertheless, it's a lovely image highlighting a blonde muse in a bright floral gown against a metallic silver background that makes the whole scene shimmer. As for the plot of the movie itself, "Gitta the shy adolescent becomes the celebrated star of a revue. One day Gitta reveals her heart to the young composer Peter. He looks great, but he is not successful. But Gitta has an idea... A new star is born—and new happiness" (Fenneker, p. 91). (Art Deco; Film; German & Swiss)

        Dirnentragodie. 1927.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) SIZE: 36 1/2 x 72 1/8 in./92.7 x 183.2 cm PRINTER: Stern & Steiner, Wien DESCRIPTION: You can already see, in this riveting two-sheet poster, why the Danish actress Asta Nielsen was the first international star of silent film: the large dark eyes, a haunted face, her boyish figure. She often portrayed headstrong, passionate women trapped by tragic circumstances, but transformed this melodramatic trope with naturalism and overt eroticism—which lead her films to be heavily censored in the U.S. "Dirnentragodie," or "Tragedy of the Street," was Nielsen's final silent role. The film epitomizes the Weimar movement called The New Objectivity, which tried to create a middle ground between Brechtian alienation and Expressionist emotionalism by forcing middle-class characters into the oppressive social circumstances of the street. "Dirnentragodie" features Nielsen as an aging prostitute who takes in a young man running away from his middle-class family. She fantasizes about a different future; the man returns to his family; she's accused of murdering her pimp. This 1927 Fenneker design was used for the release of the film in Vienna. Marmorhaus / Toten Tanz. 1919

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Artist: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) Size: 37 3/8 x 56 in./94.8 x 142.2 cm Dinse & Eckert, Berlin Fenneker creates the perfect fusion of grace and beauty, the grotesque and the macabre, for "The Dance of Death," a 1919 German film not to be confused with the similarly-titled Pola Negri film (following lot). As Coilhouse Magazine wrote in 2010, "it is not difficult to imagine oneself mesmerized, whipped into a maelstrom of sympathetic mania when confronted with such imagery [by Fenneker]." The film itself, now lost, was written by Fritz Lang (uncredited in this poster). Sascha Gura stars as The Beautiful Dancer, who is manipulated by an evil cripple to lure men to their deaths. She falls in love with one of her intended victims, a murderer himself, who then must escape a bizarre labyrinth underneath the home of the evil, crippled Daedalus. It was screened at Marmorhaus, or "The Marble House," a historic cinema in Berlin's Charlottenburg auf Kerfürstendamm district. (Film, Weimar)

Artist: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) Size: 36 3/4 x 55 3/4 in./93.4 x 141.6 cm Paul Grasnick, Berlin There is no better summary for this film than the October 29, 1934, New York Times review: "Any girl aspiring to stage or screen honors who labors under the illusion that a pretty face is essential for success in that line ought to go see Gitta Alpar in Die-Oder Keine (She, or Nobody) ... Just as she did in her first motion picture ... this vivacious Hungarian singer captures her audience with her beautiful voice and her excellent dancing long before she becomes the consort of the young ruler ... of Marana, a typical operetta kingdom. The story of how she helps a young man to defeat his elderly cousin and rival ... for the throne and also foil the schemes of a would-be exploiter ... of Marana's oil resources is of no especial account. What matters is Frau Alpar's fascinating work as a prima donna in a well-depicted scene from Traviata and the way she wins the people of Marana for her prince by her singing and her graceful and athletic dancing stunts.

Here, four adoring maids are shown clustered around Lya Mara, star of the film Miss Beryll ... Die Laune eines Millionärs (Miss Beryll ... The Mood of a Millionaire) and one of Germany's leading silent movie actresses at the time.

Artist: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) Size: 37 5/8 x 27 3/4 in./95.6 x 70.7 cm Dinse & Eckert, Berlin Fenneker was a master at combining the seedy, seductive qualities of the Weimar Republic with the German Romanticism that so captivated artists of his native country just a generation prior. This rare image for a Berlin-based nightclub is no exception, presenting theatrical frivolity against the lecherous unknown waiting in the dark.

Artist: JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) Size: 10 3/8 x 14 1/4 in./26.3 x 36.2 cm Published from 1845 to 1944, Fliegende Blätter was a richly illustrated German humor magazine. Here, Fenneker stepped outside of his usual Expressionistic horror style and gave the publication a lovely Deco design. The caption published below it at the time read: “I thought the whole car would smell like roses; but the roses now smell like gasoline.” This of course refers to the fact that many owners of luxury cars tried in vain to mask the odor of petrol in their cars.

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEF FENNEKER (1895-1956) THE DANCE OF DEATH. 1919. 54 1/2x41 inches, 138 1/2x104 cm. Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; minor restoration in margins. Fenneker designed over three hundred movie posters. His recognizable style drew largely on German Expressionism combined with a flair of aesthetic decadence. Written by Fritz Lang, Totentanz is considered by The Internet Movie Database to be a " lost film [in which] a beautiful dancer's sexual allure is used by an evil cripple to entice men to their deaths. Falling in love with one of the potential victims, she is told by the cripple that he will set her free if her lover, actually a murderer himself, survives and escapes a bizarre labyrinthe which runs beneath the cripple's house" (www.imdb.com). Even without a signature, this poster is clearly the work of Fenneker. Although another image by Fenneker for this film exists, this particular version is previously unrecorded.
