Work included in the catalogue raisonné "Apel.les Fenosa", by Raymond Cogniat (ed. Polígrafa, 1966), ref. 94. Measurements: 30 x 9 x 7 cm. We recognise in this "Figurilla" the classical theme of Aphrodite coming out of the bath, reinterpreted with great freedom and creative commitment by Apel.les Fenosa. This is a work from the sculptor's youth, when he was seeking new forms that were nevertheless rooted in the artistic dawn of the Mediterranean. Trained with Enric Casanovas, Fenosa travelled to Paris for the first time in 1921. There he held a solo exhibition in 1925, which was presented by Max Jacob. Returning to Barcelona in 1929, he held exhibitions at the Sala Parés in 1930, 1933 and 1936. At the end of the Civil War he moved back to Paris in 1939, where he definitively integrated into his artistic life. There he met great intellectuals of the time such as Theóphile Briand, Cocteau, Paul Éluard, Colette, Henri Michaux, Supervielle, Genet and Tzara, and even had a notorious romance with Coco Chanel. During these years his art discovered a vegetal world, populated by flaming female figures, which retain the fresh imprint of the artist's fingers. His works are daughters of the earth, from which they emerge, the fruit of imagination, with all their wild and natural character. He had repeated solo exhibitions at the Parisian galleries Zborowsky and Jacques Dubourg, as well as at the Hanover Gallery in London (1954), the Paul Rosenberg Gallery in New York (1960 and 1961), in Tokyo (1966 and 1981) and Madrid (1967 and 1976), among other cities. Son plâtre original est conservé à la Fondation Ap- pel-les Fenosa, en Espagne, et deux bronzes sont localisés en plus de celui présenté ici : l’un en mains privés, l’autre au musée de Rambouillet. La Femme qui parle participe de la démarche de végétalisation de la forme humaine qui anime Fenosa jusque dans les années 1960, tout comme de ses recherches sur la figuration, marquées par l’œuvre de Giacometti. Sculpteur d’origine catalane, formé auprès du sculpteur Casanovas, Appel.les Fenosa séjourne à Paris entre 1921 et 1929, avant de s’installer définitive- ment en France en 1939. Il débute le métier avec la taille directe, qu’il quitte progressivement pour le modelage. Lors de son premier séjour en France, il se rapproche des artistes espagnols de l’École de Paris, se lie d’amitié avec Picasso, et les écrivains Cocteau, Éluard, Michaux, dont il réalisera plus tard les bustes. À la poésie surréaliste qui marque le début de sa production, s’ajoute vers 1950 la re- cherche d’unité entre la nature et le geste créateur de l’homme. We recognise in this bronze the Greek theme of Aphrodite coming out of the bath, reinterpreted with freedom and creative commitment by Apel.les Fenosa. This is a work from the sculptor's youth, when he was seeking new forms that were nevertheless rooted in the artistic dawn of the Mediterranean. Trained with Enric Casanovas, Fenosa travelled to Paris for the first time in 1921. There he held a solo exhibition in 1925, which was presented by Max Jacob. Returning to Barcelona in 1929, he held exhibitions at the Sala Parés in 1930, 1933 and 1936. At the end of the Civil War he moved back to Paris in 1939, where he definitively integrated into his artistic life. There he met great intellectuals of the time such as Theóphile Briand, Cocteau, Paul Éluard, Colette, Henri Michaux, Supervielle, Genet and Tzara, and even had a notorious romance with Coco Chanel. During these years his art discovered a vegetal world, populated by flaming female figures, which retain the fresh imprint of the artist's fingers. His works are daughters of the earth, from which they emerge, the fruit of imagination, with all their wild and natural character.
