          JOHN NATHANIEL FENTON (AMERICAN, 1912-1977) SURREALIST PAINTING, oil on canvas, a large and impressive depiction of four angular musicians dressed in whimsical attire in a fantastical winter landscape with dancing nuns and horse and rider in the background, signed lower left, retains old label applied verso giving title as "THE MUSICIANS". Housed in likely original molded chestnut frame. Mid 20th century. 51 1/2" x 41 1/2" sight, 61 1/2" x 51 1/2" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Mountaindale, New York, John Nathaniel "Jack" Fenton (1912-1977) remained a New York resident throughout his life. He studied at the Art Students League with Kenneth Hayes Miller and Allen Lewis and exhibited widely in his lifetime. A painter, printmaker, and educator, Fenton explored the potential for abstraction within the human figure, often in a surreal setting. The present lot is an important example of his work.
