Henry Augustus Ferguson (1842-1911) Chromolitograph Boston, Mass.: L. Prang & Co., Boston, Mass., [1869] Central Park views. No. 2 The waterfall / after oil painting by H.A. Ferguson, N.Y., piece measures 4.5 x 9 and 5.5 x 10 inches w/ frame. Born in 1842 in Glens Falls, New York, romantic landscape painter Henry Ferguson moved to Albany in the 1860s and took study with landscape painter Homer Dodge Martin and historical genre-figure painter George Henry Boughton. Circa the late 1870s, Ferguson moved to New York City; however, his romantic nature led to extensive travels in Mexico, South America (crossing the Andes numerous times), Europe, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. A lovely facet to many of his “foreign” paintings is the capture of the local architecture of the places he visited. After his many art “excursions”, Ferguson returned to New York City where opened a studio. His landscapes included romantic views of the Hudson River, the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He would later provide conservation/restoration services to galleries and fine art collectors. Ferguson was a member of the National Academy of Design (1867-1900) and Century Association (1879-1911). He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association (1864-1884); Boston Art Club (1881-1890); Art Institute of Chicago (1888—1889, 1891); National Academy of Design (1867-1900); and Academy of the Fine Arts (1888, 1891).

Description: â€aeAshfield Mill Pond”, the painting is an early autumn scene of a pond with grass, trees, and a beautiful blue sky, the work is signed by the artist in the lower right, and also the title is inscribed verso. The inscription reads, Ashfield Mill pond- Mass Town of Ashfield in distance with hotel space? Also a seal on the canvas stretcher that reads Henry A Ferguson 1918. BiographyHenry Augustus Ferguson's paintings of tropical vegetation first earned him his artistic reputation. He would later sell City of Santiago for $10,000., an extremely sizable amount of money in the late 19th century.Likely born in 1842 in Glens Falls, New York, Ferguson was a landscape painter and highly energetic world traveler, both in years spent and distances covered, exploring exotic motifs for his paintings. Europe, Mexico, South America, Egypt, were some of his destinations, including the daunting Andes Mountains, which he traveled over a half dozen times.Ferguson eventually returned to New York City, where he had settled some years before, and there he kept a studio where he did painting and restoration. Categorized as one of the Hudson River School* painters, he often painted in the White Mountains, the Berkshires and the Hudson River Valley where Glens Falls, his hometown with population of about 10,000 people, was one of his subjects. Whether in the American northeast or far-flung locales of the world, Ferguson's romantic, meticulously detailed style was responsive to the mood, character and beauty of the scenes before him.Ferguson received no art training until moving from Glens Falls to Albany, New York in the 1860s. He studied there with painters Homer D. Martin and George Boughton, and sculptors Launt Thompson and Charles Calverly. When enough time had passed, allowing for the development of a following for his landscapes and architectural paintings, he went to New York City, joining Martin there. As a mature artist very experienced in his craft, Ferguson was often hired to restore old canvases. He was a member of the Century Association* and the National Academy of Design*. His painting, Island of San Francisco in Deserto, Venice, ca. 1900, is in the collection of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, Maine.Henry Augustus Ferguson died in 1911 in New York City. Material: Oil on canvas Maker/Artist: Henry A Ferguson Date: 19th Century Provenance: New York City Estate Size of Artwork: H. 16 x W. 26 Weight (LBS) 13 Condition: stable craquelureScattered inpaint for craquelure, mainly in the sky.relined History: Ashfield was first settled in 1743 and was officially incorporated in 1765. The town was originally called "Huntstown" for Captain Ephraim Hunt, who died in King William's War, and who had inherited the land as payment for his services. The first permanent settlement was in 1745, by Richard Ellis, an Irish immigrant from the town of Easton. The town was renamed upon reincorporation, although there is debate over its namesake; it is either for the ash trees in the area, or because Governor Bernard had friends in Ashfield, England. The town had a small peppermint industry in the nineteenth century, but for the most part the town has had a mostly agrarian economy, with some tourism around Ashfield Pond.Ashfield is the birthplace of prominent director Cecil B. DeMille (whose parents were vacationing in the town at the time), Alvan Clark, nineteenth century astronomer and telescope maker, and William S. Clark, member of the Massachusetts Senate and third president of Massachusetts Agricultural College (now UMass Amherst

Curator, Adelia Rasines Literature: Albany Institute of History and Art, Catalogue of the Collections of the Albany Institute of History and Art (Albany, NY, 1924) Henry A. Ferguson's Sunset on Lake George exemplifies the American landscape artist's shift in focus from the minute details of the Hudson River School, to an emphasis on the effects of reflective light and atmosphere. These luminous works created during the 1860s were made popular by artists like Martin Johnson Heade, Frederick Kensett, and Sanford R. Gifford, as well as Jasper Cropsey. According to exhibition records, Ferguson executed other paintings of Lake George in 1861 and 1864, which supports a circa date of 1860 for the present work. Ferguson traveled extensively throughout his career, sketching along the Hudson River, the Berkshire Mountains, and the White Mountains in addition to exotic locales such as Mexico, South America, Europe, and Africa. Ferguson was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1884, and was a member of the Century Association from 1879 to 1911. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, National Academy of Design, Century Association, Boston Art Club, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
