Considered as one of the main artists of the 20th century plastic arts in A Coruña, Elena Gago was part of the generation that started the renewal of Galician painting in the sixties, which included painters such as Mercedes Ruibal, María Antonia Dans or María Victoria de la Fuente, among others. Gago initially trained under the guidance of the painter Dolores Díaz Baliño, and later moved to Madrid, where she enrolled at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts and attended classes at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. It was in the sixties when he achieved greater prestige, which led him to exhibit his works in different cities both in Spain and Europe. In this way, Germany, Belgium, the United States and Japan were some of the different countries that witnessed his success, where he captivated both the public and the specialised press, and which led to his work being acclaimed by important personalities of the time, such as the professor Camón Aznar and the writer Camilo José Cela. Gago's style is characterised by a marked poetic realism that does not focus on precision or the use of a completely virtuoso technique, but his paintings are characterised by the enhancement of pictorial values, producing a spatial, luminous and colourful effect of the domestic elements generally depicted. His work is present in national and international collections, as well as in the María José Jove Foundation, among others.
