Eugenio Fernández Granell Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Photographer, Object Artist

Eugenio Fernández Granell (28 November 1912 – 24 October 2001), recognised as the last Spanish Surrealist, was an artist, professor, musician and writer.

As a political activist in the early 20th century, Granell was characterised by his outspoken support of Democratic Socialism and opposition to Totalitarianism. Eugenio joined the Trotskyists during his military service and eventually became a prominent member of POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista / Worker’s Party of Marxist Unification) in 1935.[1]

Following the Civil War, Granell fled to France where he was interned in concentration camps however after having escaped, Eugenio then sought exile in the Americas.

As a Surrealist Artist, Eugenio's work is principally characterised by its bright and vivid colours that explore nature and the indigenous symbolism of the Americas. His most famous works include Autorretrato (1944), Elegía por Andrés Nin (1991) as well as Crónica de los fiscales de los años horrendos (1986). Granell's work has been incorporated into exhibitions in the Maeght Gallery, the Bodley Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art as well as The Museum of Contemporary Art alongside other Surrealists such as André Breton and Marcel Duchamp.

Granell also dedicated himself as a poet, essayist and novelist, publishing 15 books in all. Some his first, and most prominent works, include 'El hombre Verde' (The Green Man, 1944) and 'Lo que sucedió' (What Occurred), a book he illustrated and designed himself which won Mexico's Don Quijote novel prize in 1969. From the mid-1960s until retirement, he was professor of Spanish literature at Brooklyn College.

The Eugenio Granell Foundation was inaugurated in 1995 to conserve the life and work of the artist with an expansive collection of his oils, drawings, constructions, collages and archives. The museum also dedicates itself to the preservation of other Surrealists such as Joan Miró, Wifredo Lam, José Caballero, William Copley, Esteban Francés, Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Picasso.

EUGENIO GRANELL (A Coruña, 1912 - Madrid, 2001). Untitled, 1946. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 40 x 30 cm. The biomorphism and the fantasy of organic inspiration characterized the peculiar surrealist style of Eugenio Granell. Here we see two characters floating in the blue. One of them is fungal, with a mushroom stem and a mushroom head. The other, longer and with a sinuous body, evokes the capricious growth of plants, and a small oval head culminates its figure. It is a colorful and dreamlike composition, with vivid colors delimited by a black line. Granell played with the idea of transforming the everyday and the natural, defying logic and suggesting constant movement, the symbiosis between the plant and anthropomorphic worlds. The humanoid bodies mimic the organic in their cresting lines. His biomorphic forms suggest a secret life. Painter, watercolorist, engraver and sculptor, Eugenio Fernández Granell spent his childhood in Santiago de Compostela, a city that will mark a large part of his plastic work. Initially inclined towards music, in 1928 he moved to Madrid to study violin at the Escuela Superior de Música. In the capital he frequented intellectual circles linked to Marxism, and finally joined the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista in 1935. At the outbreak of the civil war he joined the Republican army, and also directed "El combatiente rojo", the newspaper of his party. However, after the end of the war he was persecuted both by the new regime and by his communist comrades, because of his Trotskyist condition. He went into exile in France in 1939, and after passing through several concentration camps, he went to South America. He settles in the Dominican Republic, where he enters as first violin in the Symphony Orchestra. However, when Trujillo's dictatorship hardened, Fernández Granell left the country to settle in Guatemala, where he worked as a professor at the School of Plastic Arts. When the Guatemalan revolution broke out in 1950, he had to flee again for fear of Stalinist persecution, and this time he arrived with his family in Puerto Rico, where the painter would occupy the chair of Art History in the Faculty of Humanities. However, in spite of this continuous pilgrimage, Fernández Granell continued with his artistic work, holding exhibitions and publishing books of short stories and poetry. In 1956 he meets Marcel Duchamp, who flatters his plastic and poetic art and reinforces him in his surrealist activity. That same year he moved to New York, where he settled permanently. Professor of Spanish Literature at Brooklyn College in the city, at this stage he earned his doctorate in Sociology at the New School for Social Research, with the thesis "Picasso's Guernica. The end of a Spanish era" (1967). Fernández Granell will continue in New York until 1985, when after retiring he returns with his wife to Spain, settling in Madrid. Already widely recognized, he will be awarded outstanding prizes such as the Gold Medal of Fine Arts. Likewise, in 1995, the foundation that bears his name was established in Santiago de Compostela, and which today collects most of his plastic production.

EUGENIO GRANELL (A Coruña, 1912 - Madrid, 2001). "Behind the sphinx", 1959. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin, titled and dated on the back. Measurements: 51 x 76 cm; 64 x 88.5 cm (frame). This composition seems to evoke an underwater world of corals and metamorphic forms of all colors and textures. The title takes us into the allegorical plane. Granell resorts to surrealism and evocations of the tropical landscape (in the fifties he was exiled in the Caribbean and Latin America) to compose organic and suggestive abstractions that hide complex concepts related to the difficult political and personal moment he was living. During his stay in Guatemala, Granell absorbed influences from local cultures, which is reflected in his works through motifs and colors that evoke indigenous art and the exuberance of the landscapes. At the same time, the influence of Max Ernst's mossy landscapes, his enchanted forests and biomorphic forms suggesting a secret life can be appreciated. In the work presented here Granell shows a notable reduction of compositional elements, prioritising the figures, dispensing with the scenographies of previous periods, constructing the characters from masses of flat and intense colours. These resources enhance the monumentality of the figures and increase their symbolic and morphological description. Another characteristic element of this work is the use of the colour black as a contour line that generates forms. Est: $4,000 - $6,000

ONLINE ONLY EVENT! NO RESERVES ABOVE STARTING BIDS! A 1950s Painting by Surrealist Artist Eugenio F. Granell Formerly Part of the Art Lending Service of the Museum of Modern Art from 1958 to 1966. GRANELL, Eugenio Fernandez (Spanish, 1912-2001): Bivouac de Pressages, painted by 1958, oil on canvas, 22 inches h. x 36 inches w., 22.8125 x 36.625 x 1.5 inches framed, unsigned, titled/pencil verso, Museum of Modern Art / Art Lending Service LS 645-446 / Bodley Gallery label affixed to stretcher. Vintage artist name label to side of frame. Original or period strip molding frame. The Bodley Gallery consigned “Bivouac of Pressages” to the MoMA Art Lending Service (ALS) in May 1958, and it was returned to the Bodley Gallery in January 1966. The consignment agreement was for rental and/or sale of the painting (the typical arrangement for the ALS), and while some of the Bodley Gallery's consigned artworks by other artists were sold through this service, this one was not. During the consignment period, it was loaned once (to Dr. Leonard Faust of 6 Karen Lane, New Rochelle, NY), from August to October of 1965. The ALS took on a total of five works by Granell, all consigned by the Bodley Gallery. Some of these were borrowed, and none of them sold. The Bodley Gallery was exhibiting Granell from 1960 to 1965, with at least two solo shows for him, one in February and March 1960 and the other (showing Granell's "recent paintings") February 2-13, 1965, but Bivouac of Pressages would not have been included in either of these, since MoMA held it during this time. –Research by NYU - MOMA Ph.D. Candidate, December, 2016. Provenance: Bodley Gallery, New York; MOMA Art lending Service...Since prior to 2010 a Lake Worth, Palm Beach County collection.
