Between 1810 and 1812 he visited Ireland on several occasions, producing a large number of commissioned paintings for wealthy Irish patrons. Ferneley kept a series of account books dating from 1807 to 1860, the detailed annotations of which have been of great use to later historians. JOHN FERNELEY SR BRITISH, 1782-1860 HUNT SCENE Oil on canvas Catalogue note: John E. Ferneley Sr. is one of the most prominent equine painters in British art. Born in 1782, Ferneley began painting horses under the guidance of his mentor, the sporting painter Benjamin Marshall. Marshall enrolled Ferneley in the Royal Academy school, where Ferneley would exhibit his first painting in 1806. His reputation as a skilled equine painter grew quickly, allowing him to travel throughout England and Ireland and take many commissions. In 1814, Ferneley settled in the town of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, which at the time was a major hub for fox hunting. Ferneley's equine and hunting scenes became highly sought-after. He enjoyed a steady stream of wealthy patrons, including dukes, earls, professional sportsmen and famous socialites of the era, most notably Beau Brummel and Alfred D'Orsay. The 19th century art critic and writer, Walter Shaw Sparrow, once wrote that Ferneley was "...the Gainsborough of English Horse painters." His work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery (London) and the National Museum of Racing (Saratoga), among others.

Charles Davis is featured in the 1897 book "The Queen's Hounds and Stag-hunting Recollections" by Baron Thomas Lister Ribblesdale and Edward Burrows. The book features illustrations of Charles Davis astride Hermit. Hermit is mentioned in the text as Davis's favorite mount. Davis is depicted riding Hermit in several paintings by other artists. Biographical note: John Ferneley, Sr. was born on 18 May 1782 at Thrussington, Leicestershire. By the time of his death in Melton Mowbray in 1860, he was regarded as one of the great British animal painters, specializing in horses, prize sheep, and cattle. He opened his studio in Melton Mowbray which was fast becoming a center for fashionable country sports particularly fox hunting. Painting in Melton during the hunting season, he also toured around the great estates of England and Ireland, painting landowners' horses, cattle, sheep, and hounds. His work became much sought after and his patrons included members of British and European Royal families and personalities such as Beau Brummel and the Count d'Orsay. He depicted Charles Davis on another mount in at least one painting (source: Leicestershire Country Council Museum Collections).

Portrait of Two Horses and a pony. in "The Melton Mowbray of John Ferneley by Guy Paget" 1931. Catalogue note: John E.

This may well be the J. White Esq., for whom Ferneley painted a horse portrait the following year (ibid., p. 129, no. 78) and two further portraits in 1828 (ibid., p. 135, no. 254).
