(Verona 1813–1871) Largo San Nazaro with the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso, Verona, signed and dated lower left corner: Ferrari Carlo / 1847, oil on canvas, 72 x 98 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection, since at least 100 years The present painting depicts the Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Verona, a building of early mediaeval origin that was later rebuilt at the end of the fifteenth century; the large portal in the foreground, characterised by columns embellished with knotted drapes, was designed in 1688 by architect Antonio Saletti. The attention to the architectural features of the buildings is combined with a detailed rendering of the scenes of everyday life in the foreground, from the fishmonger to the picture dealer. The work is dated 1847, the year in which Ferrari was appointed professor at the Accademia in Verona. Carlo Ferrari, known as Ferrarin, was trained at the Accademia of Verona. He enjoyed great success for his city views, not only of Verona but also of Venice and Rome. His patrons also included members of European aristocracy including the Princes Demidov and Troubetzkoy, Countess Samoyloff and Marshal Radetzky.
