In seguito fu nuovamente a Bologna. Ferretti, Giovanni Domenico: Harlequin Expelled by his Mistress\; Harlequin as Musical Master

          Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Harlekin als Meister der Musik Ferretti, Giovanni Domenico Florence 1692 - 1768 Oil on canvas. Relined. 97 x 76,5cm. Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Italy. Two figures on an empty stage fill the frame of this painting: the masked harlequin in his typical colourful suit under a blue coat holds a fiddle and bow ready to play. His whole body is in motion because the front part of his left foot carries all his weight. He has lost the other leg. It is replaced by a wooden leg, which at this moment has no contact with the ground. Despite his handicap the harlequin is light-footed and enchants the young lady at his side. In a flowing pink silk dress and holding a transparent scarf, the dancing partner timidly sets off to dance the steps. Her gaze seeks the eyes of the man behind the mask. Harlequin, who wins the woman's favour in this painting, is brusquely rejected by an adored woman in the other painting. With her hand the resolute lady pushes away the head of the man crouching on the ground. His whole posture radiates his failure. The verses he recited to his chosen one have obviously not softened her soul. The fact that a dog runs away from the image with a good piece of meat in its mouth does not make it any better for the ever-hungry Harlequin: the situation is beyond repair. The Florentine painter Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, who created these paintings, had studied with Francesco Chiusuri in Imola and various masters in Bologna. From 1714 he was a busy painter for sacred frescoes and easel paintings in his hometown Florence. He also was a teacher at the academy of arts in Florence and 1731 one of its directors. These two counterparts about success and failure of love (of a man) have to be seen in a larger context. In the 1940s, Ferretti created an extensive series of paintings with the protagonist Harlequin, the central figure of the \"Commedia dell'Arte\". Twenty paintings of this series are now in the collection of the \"Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze\". Harlequin's life is also placed here in a chronological order for example, the painting \"Harlequin as a Return from the War\" shows how the leg amputation occurred. The Sienese patrician family Sansedoni, who are known to have collected theatre motifs, commissioned the first of these series of paintings. The Sansedonis and the artist Ferretti, who had contact in Florence with the \"Accademia del Vangelista\", an amateur drama group which had emerged from a brotherhood, shared the interest in the stage. So it is easy to imagine that the commission from the Sansedoni family, whose Sienese Palazzo Ferretti also frescoed, was a welcome change from his traditional sacred themes for him. And Ferretti had great success with his Harlequin series. Four of the paintings were distributed as prints and he received commissions to repeat the series and partly to vary it (a probably later version is now in The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida). The present paintings were possibly part of such a larger series. In their exemplary \"success\" and \"failure\" of love, however, they are complete as a pair. Ferretti, Giovanni Domenico: The Condemnation of Philotas by Alexander the Great

          Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Ferretti, Giovanni Domenico Florence 1692 - 1768 Ca. 1740. Oil on canvas. Relined. 97,5 x 143,5cm. Framed. Exhibitions: \"Il fasto e la ragione. Arte del Settecento a Firenze\" Exhib. Uffizien Florenz, Florence 2009, cat. no. 57. Provenance: Private ownership, Italy. The present painting is considered one of the most recent additions to the oeuvre of Giovanni Domenico Ferretti, the most important painter of the 18th century in Tuscany. The painting was shown in 2009 on the occasion of the exhibition \"ll Fasto e la ragione. Arte del Settecento a Firenze\" at the Uffizi Gallery. This extraordinary painting of museum quality is part of a pair of paintings with scenes from the life of the King of Macedonia Alexander the Great, which Feretti created around 1740. The counterpart is in the Musée Calvet in Avignon and shows \"Alexander the Great and his doctor Philip\" (oil on canvas, 100 x 130 cm, Inv. 22811). This painting shows the conspiracy of the commander Philotas, who finally fell out of favour with Alexander the Great and was executed. The event is mentioned by the Roman historian Quintus Curzius Rufus in the historiographical work \"Tales of Alexander the Great\": Philotas was accused by his brother-in-law Cenus in front of Alexander the Great, because he feared that he would be regarded as his accomplice and executed. Philotas was then imprisoned and put on trial and then - in the hope of naming the other conspirators - tortured. He was executed that same year, and a short time later his father was also killed by Alexander's entourage, although he had not taken part in the conspiracy. Like its counterpart in the Museum of Avignon, this painting has a vivid chiaroscuro and a colour palette rich in nuances. In his painting, the artist reveals the effects of the Bolognese masters and the inspiration of Venetian painting, which he learned during the years of his training: With the sensuality and elegance of the forms as well as the speed of the ductus, the artist develops a very individual style which becomes his trademark. The works with scenes from the life of Alexander the Great take up a theme that the artist had previously worked on in the frescoes of Palazzo Nencini in Prato. Ferretti therefore used a successful composition for a diptych intended for an important client who was still unknown. In the 1740s, when the cycle could be traced back to a strict stylistic affinity with other works by the artist, Ferretti's success reached its peak, and the painter's works, with both profane and religious scenes, were highly sought after and in great demand on the art market: in the mid-18th century he painted large paintings and fresco cycles for important Tuscan monasteries and decorations in palaces in Florence and other cities, such as Palazzo Quaratesi and Ceuli in Pisa. Baldassari, 'Giovanni Domenico Ferretti', Milano 2002, pp. 191- 192, nn. 168 - 169.

Ription Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (Florence 1692 - 1768 ) A lute player and a dark-skinned page, signed right of centre (in the sheet of music) Giov. Ferretti, oil on canvas, 123.8 x 96.7 cm, framed, (Wo) Giovanni Domenico Ferretti's oeuvre unites two pictorial genres that could not have been any less different. On the one hand, starting out from his very first commission, the decoration of the cathedral at Imola, which he won because of a recommendation by the bishop of Bologna, he executed numerous large frescoes of religious and mythological subjects. On the other hand, his oeuvre, apart from several portraits, also includes canvas paintings of a profane and humorous nature that sometimes bordered caricature. In both fields, Ferretti proved to be a master of supraregional significance among the Florentine artists active during the reign of Francis Stephen of Lorraine, the future emperor Francis I (Maser). The artist frequently placed his signature into an open book or sheet of music. The present pa nting was probably executed in the context of the famous Harlequin series. His religious frescoes had won him a call to the Accademia del Disegno, which he headed as consule as from 1732; he also was in charge of the grand ducal tapestry factory. Being a highly esteemed member of the town's elite of artists, Ferretti was soon granted access to the exclusive circle of the Accademia del Vangelista, originally a religious brotherhood that in the 18th century had turned into a theatre club. Improvised performances in the manner of the comedia dell'arte were part of the brotherhood's programme, especially during the carnival season. Literature: Comp.
