Oct. 07, 2024

Ciro Ferri (1633-1689) A pilgrim comforted by an angel (St Roch?)

        Est: €7,000 - €9,000

The Roman painter Ciro Ferri was the most important pupil of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669), a major master of Roman Baroque painting. In a kind of courtyard with a wooden staircase and damaged paving, a man lies alone on a straw mat, his pale skin colour and facial expression indicating that he is seriously ill. With the last of his strength, he holds a sheet of paper and a quill pen in his hands. A pilgrim's staff, a rosary and a small bowl for drinking lie beside him. An angel in a golden robe and blue cloak glides down on a cloud and brings the pilgrim a wreath of flowers. Heavenly, golden light appears in the clouds behind him. On the left edge of the picture, next to a pillar of the building, we can see out into a landscape. This could be St Roch, who, when he fell ill with the plague, withdrew and was comforted by an angel. A dog brought him daily bread. He is usually depicted with a bare leg and a plague sore, but the wound is not visible in this picture and the letter is not mentioned in his vita. Oil on canvas, 73.5 × 97 cm

        Ferri, Ciro

        Est: €600 - €1,200

Ferri, Ciro (1633-1689). Hl. Maria Magdalena empfängt den Schleier. Zeichnung. Tuschfeder in Sepia, graulaviert, am Unterrand zeitgenössisch bezeichnet. 33,3:21,5 cm.

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

An etching by Cornelis Bloemaert (1603-1692) derived from Ferri's composition was printed in 1678, copies of which are in the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Chief pupil and assistant of the painter and architect Pietro da Cortona (1596/7-1669) in Rome, Ferri completed the internal decorations at the Pitti Palace in Florence that Cortona had begun. Among his own work, one of the most impressive is the vast frescoes in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Bergamo. Another of his major paintings - St Ambrose healing an invalid - was the main altarpiece in the Church of Sant'Ambrosio della Massima, Rome.

Ciro Ferri (1633–1689), Madonna with Sleeping Child

        Est: €4,000 - €8,000

Cirro Ferri was a pupil and successor of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) and became famous mainly as a fresco painter in Rome, Florence and Bergamo. He also worked as a sculptor and architect. The baby Jesus on the pedestal is lovingly placed by the mother on her breast. With his right hand, the child grabs his mother's breast, with his left hand he leans on Maria's forearm. Maria holds her child in a white cloth and tenderly supports her son's back and right leg. Full of tenderness, she bowed her head over the child and gives him her protection and love. This intimacy is derived from the Byzantine image type of Eleusis, the "virgin of tenderness" (virgin of tenderness), but completely reinterpreted and conceived in terms of genre. Maria is depicted in youthful, rosy-cheeked beauty, her light brown hair draped in a transparent golden veil. Dimensions 75 x 51 cm, Oil on canvas, pasted on wood

MOSES VERTEIDIGT DIE TÖCHTER DES JETRO GEGEN FREMDE HIRTEN Öl auf Leinwand. 116,5 x 164,5 cm. A.R. Literatur: Vgl. MOSES VERTEIDIGT DIE TÖCHTER VON JETHRO Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 126 x 174 cm. In teilvergoldetem Rahmen. Qualitätvolle Malerei in frischen, leuchtenden Farben. (1301551) (18) Ciro Ferri 1634 Rome – 1689 ibid., attributed MOSES DEFENDS THE DAUGHTERS OF JETHRO Oil on canvas. Relined. 126 x 174 cm. High-quality painting in fresh bright colouration. Ferri created several paintings and a drawing of this subject – the composition is consistent, but the number of women at the well and the shepherds varies. A new element in the present work is the addition of a pulley at the well. The movement of the figures and the colouration of the clothes could suggest a collaboration with Berrettini.

MOSES VERTEIDIGT DIE TÖCHTER DES JETRO GEGEN FREMDE HIRTEN Öl auf Leinwand. 116,5 x 164,5 cm. G. B. Fidanza, A rediscovered altarpiece by Pietro da Cortona and insights into the collaboration between the master and his pupils, in The Burlington Magazine, CLV, 2013, 1325, pp. 541 - 545).
