Jean Leon Gerome Ferris 19th Century Signed Oil On Canvas Painting Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was an American painter who made significant contributions to the depiction of American history through art. In the nineteenth century, the tradition of genre painting, which included historical figures and incidents, was quite prevalent in the United States, and Ferris continued this tradition into the twentieth century with great popularity. His major work, "The Pageant of a Nation," is a testament to this tradition's strength and the appeal of such historical series. Ferris studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and was influenced by the political, cultural, and patriotic climate of the Victorian era. His European education involved studying with notable artists like Adolphe Bouguereau and was privately tutored by Jean Leon Gerome, after whom he was named. His artistic style was primarily based on the juste milieu, popular in France during the 1880s. Notably, Ferris' style matured but did not significantly change over his career. He devoted his life to creating historically accurate paintings, prioritizing historical accuracy and humanistic portrayal over avant-garde movements. His works were exhibited at Congress Hall in Philadelphia from 1916 to 1931, and he also worked for book and magazine publishers. Beautiful etching of a Moroccan woman on a rug, holding a metal vessel, signed lower left in the plate: G. Ferris. Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was born in Pennsylvania when the Civil War was raging. Historical painter, illustrator, etcher, he created work that is in Congress Hall in Philadelphia. He studied under William Adolphe Bouguereau at the Julian Academy in Paris, where he received the impetus to concentrate on historical painting. Until 1900 he traveled and sketched in England, France, Spain, Morocco and Belgium, specializing in historical analyses of architecture, customs, and dress as they might apply to the U.S. Overall size: 17 x 14 1/4 in. Additional INformation: Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (August 18, 1863 â March 18, 1930[1]) was an American painter best known for his series of 78 scenes from American history, entitled The Pageant of a Nation, the largest series of American historical paintings by a single artist.[2] Ferris was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Stephen James Ferris, a portrait painter who was a devotee of Jean-LÃ©on GÃ©rÃ´me (after whom he was named) and also an admirer of Mariano Fortuny.[3] He grew up around art; he was trained by his father[2] and his uncles Edward Moran and Thomas Moran were both acclaimed painters.[4](Wikipedia) Ferris enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1879 and trained further at the AcadÃ©mie Julian beginning in 1883 under William-Adolphe Bouguereau.[2] He also met his namesake Jean-LÃ©on GÃ©rÃ´me, who greatly influenced his decision to paint scenes from American history. Ferris wrote, "[GÃ©rÃ´me's] axiom was that one would paint best that with which he is most familiar".[4] His early subjects were Orientalist in nature since that movement was in vogue when he was young. In 1882, he exhibited a painting entitled Feeding the Ibis which was valued at $600.[5] By 1895, he had gained a reputation as a historical painter, and he embarked on his dream of creating a series of paintings that told a historical narrative. In 1898, he sold General Howe's Levee, 1777, but he later realized that such a series could not be complete if the separate paintings could not be kept together. Consequently, he never sold another, but he did sell the reproduction rights to various publishing companies. This had the effect of greatly popularizing his work, as these companies made prints, postcards, calendars, and blank-backed trade cards to use in advertisements. Laminated cards of these works were still being sold as late as 1984.[2] Ferris married Annette Amelia Ryder in 1894, and the couple had a daughter named Elizabeth Mary.[6] He died in Philadelphia in 1930. The Landing of William Penn The paintings showed idealized portrayals of famous moments from American history. The complete series was shown at Independence Hall in Philadelphia from 1913 to 1930, then moved next door to Congress Hall. In later years, it was shown in a number of locations, including the Smithsonian Institution, before being returned to the Ferris family.[5] His works were widely popular for many years, but modern critics are far less generous in their praise. The American Philosophical Society claims that his historical paintings confuse "verity with verisimilitude",[7] and art historian Gerald Ackerman describes them as "splendid in the accuracy of accessories, clothing and especially in the details of land conveyances and ships", but "extremely dry in execution and rather monotonous in composition."[5]

Oil on academy board, 8 x 12 in. (20.4 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Small paint losses at lower edge. N.B. This painting apparently served as the basis for an etching that illustrated William Harrison Ainsworth's book, John Law (Philadelphia: George Barrie & Sons, N.D.), which included as illustrations a portrait after Sir Godfrey Kneller and three etchings by Adrien Nargeot after paintings by J.L. Gerome Ferris. A label on the reverse titled "American Manufacture/Exported for Reproduction and to be Returned" lists George Barrie & Son as the place of return and the export date as "28 October 1897." Adrien Jean Nargeot was an engraver born in Paris in 1837.
