Wong Perng Fey (b. 1974) Grassland Series, late 1990s

        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

Dense, seemingly interminable. From far and near, and if you take a small-square cut-out from anywhere in the painting, you get different points of view from the different textures, colorations with light elements and forms. Looking at it closely, the vegetation whether of productive use or wild overgrowth, it is an intricately woven matrix while exuding a Patterning aesthetic. The close-cropped vegetation provides a cover, a protection for whatever lies within, and therein lies the element of mystery. Also, the play of light in highlighting or diminishing or nuancing what is seen. It may just be a natural grassland landscape of verisimilitude but there are philosophical underpinnings. This artwork was exhibited in the Malaysia Open Exhibition at National Art Gallery and documented in the exhibition catalogue. Since 2010, Wong Perng Fey has relocated to artistic enclaves in China. After graduating from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1998, he got a boost with the artist’s residency at Rimbun Dahan in 2002, and he did not have his first solo, at Valentine Willie Fine Art, until 2000, but more than made up for it after that with solos even in Jakarta (2009), Singapore (2011), Beijing (2012, 2014, 2018), Hong Kong (2015), and Kuala Lumpur Richard Koh Fine Art (2014, 2018). He was also featured in Beirut Art Fair, Art Expo Malaysia, and Art Stage Singapore. 172 x 240cm

Wong Perng Fey has been touted as a contemporary landscape artist, playing with atmospheric and chromatic hues and textural nuances, often in ambitious large-format works. His landscapes are not the picturesque types or filled with soaring paeans of rarefied peaks, but one full of character, though lolling between abstract and realism, and raw beauty. They are transient like the humans passage, and often, there is little suggestion even of human habitation, though there is of human intervention. Perng Fey is in Beijing for the past seven years, including a stint at the famous 798 Art Zone in Dashanzi and the now demolished Heiqiao art district. Wong Perng Fey graduated with a Diploma from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur, in 1998, and was Rimbun Dahan’s resident artist in 2002. His first solo was at Valentine Willie Fine Art in 2000 and had several solos at Richard Koh Fine Art including Equilibrium in 2014 and Impetus in January 2018. He took part in Art Stage Singapore 2015, Beirut Art Fair 2011 and Art Expo Malaysia 2011. Among his overseas shows were Role Play (Vivi Yip Art Room, Jakarta, 2009), I’ll Wait For You To Come Back (Slot Gallery, Sydney, 2010), The Other Shore (798 Art Zone, Beijing, 2012), Equilibrium (Art Seasons, Beijing, 2014) and Tonight The Light Is Almost Sweet (Hong Kong, 2015).

Wong Perng Fey’s highly personalised interpretations of the Malaysian landscape are full of tactility, ambience and emotions, expressing Perng Fey’s own reaction to the depletion of nature. His dramatic gestures and abstract renditions are unconventional and give an unusual perspective in conceptualising landscape. Wong Perng Fey graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Having had solo exhibitions in Singapore, Indonesia and Australia, he has also participated in numerous group exhibitions such as Aku — 99 Self Portraits (1999) and Landscape To Landscape (2002) at Galeri Petronas, Kuala Lumpur. It’s truly a bold move by Wong Perng Fey to tackle this subject of a grassy patch in nocturnal ambience with glimpses from a dim light from the lower left. With the tall stalks genuflecting left and right and some bowing slightly and extremely, it looks like a dance out of the Shakespearean Midsummer’s Night Dream. Playing on pattern and design and light, tones and perspective, the work comes off as nearly abstract. It’s a kaleiscopic of Nature within Nature, offering a magical moment often missed by someone taking it for another of an ordinary scene in Nature.Perng Fey has relocated to China but keeps the art crowd here informed about his artistic developments and preoccupations through exhibitions at Richard Koh Fine Arts in Kuala Lumpur (Examples New Life in 2008, Recent Works in 2010, Transitions in 2011 and Equilibrium in 2014). In the interim, he managed to slip in exhibitions outside Malaysia: Jakarta, at the Vivi Yip Art Room in 2009 in an exhibition called Role Play; in Sydney, in Slot Gallery in a show titled, I’ll Wait for You To Come Back in 2010; and in Beijing, China, namely at 798 Art Zone (The Other Shore) in 2012 and Art Seaons (Equilibrium, 2014); and in Hong Kong, titled Tonight The Light Is Almost Sweet, 2015. His first solos were at Valentine Willie Fine Art (Kuala Lumpur), now defunct: 2000; New Landscape, 2002; Works 2003-2004, 2004; Still View, 2005; and New Life, 2008. The windswept vast vistas of an oil palm plantation with the purplish dark hues of dusk and with visibility reduced is a piece of Wong Perng Fey’s contemporary landscape. What is contemporary or so ‘contemporary’ about this new landscape is difficult to defined, for it is certainly not so much the style and more an adjective, with the accent on the approach, design and construction with new sensibilities, but it is something ever open to change. As opposed to simple plein air exercise, it is more structured maybe but with an eye for the atmospherics. The serrated ranks of the closely planted oil plant trees form an interesting play of light which offers some forms as well as contrast, taking up a third of the whole work, while the top is the sky with a large expanse of heavy clouds virtually snoozing on the tree-tops.
