John M Field (1771-1841) A silhouette miniature of William Pitt the Younger (1759-1806), head and shoulders, profile to the right signed 'field' (under the truncation) painted on ivory and bronzed, oval 2.1cm Provenance: Bonhams, London, 8th April 2010, lot 23, when acquired by the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) William Pitt the Younger became in 1783 the youngest Prime Minister ever at the age of 24 (although at this period the term Prime Minister was not used). He served as the First Lord of the Treasury twice, from 1783 to 1801 and from 1804 until his death in 1806. Born in 1759, the son of the prominent politician, William Pitt the Elder (1708-1778), who himself previously served as Prime Minister from 1766-68, Pitt the Younger entered politics at a young age. In 1766, his father was created Earl of Chatham. In 1782, he joined the government of Lord Shelburne as Chancellor of the Exchequer and was appointed a member of the Privy Council. As First Lord of the Treasury, he focused on reducing the national debt and promoting free trade. He also helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American War of Independence. Despite his successes, Pitt's health began to decline, and he died in 1806 at the age of 46. John M Field (British, 1771-1841) Silhouette of Dr Samuel Arnold, Professor in Music (1740-1802), 8.5 x 7cm (3.5 x 2.75in); together with a silhouette of a Gentlemen facing left, by another hand, 7.5 x 6cm (3 x 2.5in) (2) silhouette Provenance: John Field purchased at Heirloom & Howard Ltd., Hay Hill, London, 1980, where acquired by the late owner. From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Dr Samuel Arnold was a son of Thomas Arnold and was a child of the Chapel Royal, where he was later organist and composer from 1783-1802. As composer to Covent Garden theatre he wrote many operas and The Prodigal Son is his best known oratorio. He also composed many anthems. He succeeded Benjamin Cooke as Abbey organist 1793-1802, and married Mary Ann Napier in 1771 by whom he had four children - Samuel James, who became a London theatre manager and married Matilda Pye, Caroline who was buried in the west cloister of the Abbey in 1795, Marianne who married William Ayrton, and another daughter. "Samuel Arnold Mus.Doc. Organist and Composer to the Chapel Royal 1783, Organist of Westminster Abbey 1789. Died 22 October 1802"
