        Het Knekelballet van Harry van Tussenbroek (Skeleton Ballet) (1940) Signed and dated 1940 lower right Oil on canvas, 81 x 65 cm Provenance: Collection D.H.W. Filarski (the artist), thence by descent Note: Harry van Tussenbroek was more of a puppet maker than a puppeteer. He crafted his refined puppets from various materials, such as fabric scraps, feathers, glass, and animal skeleton parts. In 1937, he gained international fame when he won the Grand Prix with his marionettes at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne (World expo) in Paris. After 1945, he organised several exhibitions featuring his puppets. In 1963, he passed away, with Televizier calling him "one of the most remarkable artists the Netherlands has ever had." His puppets were so dear to him that he wished to be cremated with them. His family tried to prevent this in a lawsuit, but ultimately, the puppets were burned. Van Tussenbroek was friends with various artists who portrayed his puppets in their works, including Jan Sluijters, Henri C. Maclean, Bets Bayens, Henri Berssenbrugge, Eva Besnyö, Lizzy Ansingh, and Dirk Filarski. In the present painting, created in 1940, Filarski depicted one of the most remarkable puppets from Van Tussenbroek's Knekelballet (Skeleton Ballet), which was made with a bird’s skull. Filarski (the artist), thence by descent Note: “Shortly after arriving in Bergen, the newly married Filarski moved from Loudelsweg to Oosterweg 23. Filarski owed this housing to the collector Maschmeijer. The house - a partially demolished farmhouse with only two rooms remaining - was named ‘Kunsttempel’ (Art Temple) but became more commonly known as the "Electric Cube" due to its poor wiring. They lived there from 1918 to 1926. During this period, their son Lakkie Jr. wrote in his diary: "Across from my birthplace stood a large farm belonging to Schouten. I often played with their children. When I was about five years old, my father had a kitchen built onto the ‘cube.’ The mentioned Schouten farm was immortalised several times by Filarski, and he made a lithograph of it - in reverse.” (Renée Smithuis, D.H.W.         Farm in Giethoorn, Provenance:-With art dealer Van Wisselingh, Haarlem, where acquired in April 2015 by family of the present owner, In 1942, Filarski resided for an extended period with his youngest son at the farm of the artist couple Stien Eelsingh and Roel Frankot, situated in Staphorst. During his stay, he frequently ventured into Giethoorn to capture the essence of its farms, bridges, and landscapes on canvas. Painted circa 1923–1925.We are grateful to Renée Smithuis for her help in cataloguing this lot. She suggests that this is the cemetery of Prats de Mollo, a border town of France and Spain in the Pyrenees. Filarski traveled there several times between 1923 and 1927.

        Dirk Filarski (1885-1964) , A farm possibly in Giethoorn or Staphorst , signed 'Filarski' (lower right); signed again and annotated with the address of the artist (on the stretcher), oil on canvas, 40x50 cm, Provenance:-Acquired directly from the painter by the family of the present owner. , Executed between 1942 and 1947. Filarski lived in Staphorst in Stien Eelsingh's house during WWII, painting in the Staphorst and Giethoorn area at the time.
