  • Millard Fillmore's Personally Owned Teacup and Saucer, Ex: Sotheby's
    Jan. 29, 2025

Millard Fillmore's Personally Owned Teacup and Saucer, Ex: Sotheby's

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Millard Fillmore n.p., n.d. Millard Fillmore's Personally Owned Teacup and Saucer, Ex: Sotheby's Relic A lovely piece of tableware from the Millard Fillmore White House, a white porcelain teacup and saucer accented with gilt rims and edging, a simply-adorned handle and with a delicate fluted edge. The cup measures 3.75" in diameter x 2.375" high, and the saucer is 5.66" in diameter. Light wear and loss to gilt, some light staining and a period crack, otherwise in very good condition. Ex: Sotheby's Parke-Bernet, New York, November 17, 1973, lot 777; sold Butterfield & Butterfield Fine American Furniture & Decorative Arts, San Francisco, November 4, 1992, lot 74. Fillmore, the son of tenant farmers from Western New York, entered the White House following the death of Zachary Taylor with a modest mindset culled from his childhood; this elegantly minimalist cup and saucer exemplify his and Abigaile's unpretentious taste. Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) served as our 13th president following the death of his predecessor Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). Fillmore's most enduring legacy was his endorsement of the Compromise of 1850. This agreement, launched in a series of five bills by Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, addressed issues of slavery and territorial expansion. Although the Compromise was hoped to resolve sectional conflicts over slavery, it would only delay the onset of the Civil War by a decade. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Kennedy, Secretary of the Executive Committee." The Great Exhibition of 1851, held in London's Hyde Park, was a monumental event showcasing the industrial and cultural prowess of the era. Housed within the magnificent Crystal Palace, a vast iron and glass structure designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, the exhibition featured over 100,000 exhibits from around the world. Visitors marveled at technological innovations, artistic masterpieces, and exotic goods, representing the pinnacle of human achievement and creativity. From the latest steam engines and machinery to exquisite fabrics and intricate crafts, the exhibition was a celebration of progress and international collaboration, drawing millions of attendees and leaving a lasting legacy on the Victorian era and beyond. Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, had a connection to the Great Exhibition of 1851 through his support and facilitation of American participation. During his presidency, Fillmore recognized the importance of showcasing American industrial and cultural achievements on the global stage. He endorsed the involvement of the United States in the exhibition and helped coordinate the efforts to send American exhibits to London. This participation allowed the United States to demonstrate its advancements and ingenuity alongside other leading nations, enhancing its international reputation and fostering transatlantic connections during a period of rapid technological progress. Peter Force was an influential American historian, archivist, and politician of the 19th century, renowned for his dedication to preserving the nation's historical documents. His most notable achievement was the "American Archives," a multi-volume series compiling an extensive collection of Revolutionary War-era documents. Among these treasures was his printing of the Declaration of Independence, known as the Force Declaration, which provided scholars and the public with access to high-quality facsimiles of this foundational document. Force's meticulous work in historical preservation ensured that future generations could study and appreciate the pivotal moments of American history with greater accuracy and understanding. Admitted to the New York bar in 1823, Fillmore had partnered with Nathan K. Hall (1810-1874) in 1834, and Solomon G. Haven (1810-1861) in 1836. The Buffalo, New York-based firm of Fillmore, Hall, and Haven was politically conservative and politically active; all three law partners would represent New York's 32nd Congressional District as Whig candidates between 1833-1855. President Fillmore later appointed Hall Postmaster General as well as a federal district judge.  Fillmore, the son of tenant farmers from upstate New York, lawyer, and aspiring politician, assumed the presidency after the death of his predecessor Zachary Taylor. Fillmore’s most enduring presidential legacy was his endorsement of the Compromise of 1850. This agreement, launched in a series of five bills by Illinois Senator Stephen A. During the onset of the latter, he commanded a brief engagement with "Stonewall" Jackson at the Battle of Hoke's Run and produced an early Union victory.
