        William Finden (1787 London - 1852 ibid.) after Anthonis van Dyck (1599 Antwerp - 1641 London): Portrait of Montague Bertie, Earl of Lindsey, c. 1850, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Engraved by W. Finden Montagu Bertie, Earl of Lindsey. Ob. 1666. From the Original of Vandyke, in the Collection of the right Hon. ble Baroness Willoughby of Eresby". Date: c. 1850 Description: The Earl of Linsey is depicted on his hip. He is leaning on a stick with his right hand and his left hand on his hip. He looks confidently at the viewer. His long curls reach down to his shoulders and frame his youthful face. His black breastplate and the helmet on the left of the picture shimmer in the light. William Finden (London 1787 - London 1852) was a British steel and copper engraver, illustrator and watercolourist. Finden was apprenticed to James Mitan between 1800 and 1808, but he was strongly influenced by James Heath. At first he engraved for booksellers and illustrated, among others, the new edition History of St. Paul's Cathedral by William Dugdale (1818). From about 1829 to 1846 Finden ran a graphic studio together with his brother Edward with numerous assistants and pupils. More illustrations and engravings after paintings by well-known masters followed. Montague Peregrine Bertie, 11th Earl of Lindsey (1815 - 1899) was a British nobleman and soldier. Features a view over the ships and docks with the Wearmouth Bridge in the background, a through arch bridge across the River Wear in Sunderland.
