Installation Artist, b. 1925 - d. 2006

Ian Hamilton Finlay, CBE (28 October 1925 – 27 March 2006) was a Scottish poet, writer, artist and gardener.

Finlay was born in Nassau, Bahamas, to James Hamilton Finlay and his wife, Annie Pettigrew, both of Scots descent.

He was educated at Dollar Academy in Clackmannanshire and later at Glasgow School of Art. At the age of 13, with the outbreak of the Second World War, he was evacuated to family in the countryside. In 1942, he joined the British Army.[5] Finlay was married twice and had two children, Alec and Ailie. He died in Edinburgh. He is buried with his parents and wife in Abercorn Churchyard in West Lothian. The grave lies in the extreme south-east corner of the churchyard.

              Est: $400 - $600

"Homage to Mozart" by Ian Hamilton Finlay, 1970 Signed Lithograph. Paper size is 20 x 15 inches, with an image size of 13 x 18 inches. The Lithograph is from an edition size of 300 and is not framed. The condition was rated A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling. Additional details: This exquisite black and silver silkscreen, printed on white by Wild Hawthorn Press in 1970, is a testament to the collaborative genius of Ian Hamilton Finlay and artist Ron Costley. Finlay, a seminal figure in concrete poetry and conceptual art, has hand signed and numbered this piece in pencil out of an edition of 300 on the verso, adding a touch of authenticity and exclusivity. The artwork features an intricately drawn ship by Costley, with elaborate rigging and sails. This intricate detail is a visual metaphor for Mozart’s highly complex musical forms, reflecting the harmony and sophistication inherent in both the visual and auditory arts. The interplay of black and silver hues against the white background creates a striking contrast, emphasizing the detailed craftsmanship and the thematic depth of the piece. Finlay’s fascination with nautical themes and historical references is evident in this work. By juxtaposing the technical precision of a ship's rigging with the intricate compositions of Mozart, Finlay invites viewers to explore the connections between different forms of artistic expression. The meticulous design and execution highlight his ability to merge literary and visual elements seamlessly.

Star/Steer, 1966, screenprint, silver on steel grey paper, the full sheet, unnumbered (as issued) from the edition of 350, the full sheet, printed by Tarasque Press, Nottingham, sheet size 57 x 44.5 cm (22 1/2 x 17.5 ins) QTY: (1) NOTE: Star/Steer is a Christmas print by Finlay, referring to the Star of Bethlehem steering the three wise men to Jerusalem. This is one of the artist's most successful and well-known mid-1960s concrete poetry prints. Though the date is often cited as 1966 (see Murray and Simig), in fact the print was made and released in 1968 by Tarasque Press on behalf of Finlay, who had a heart attack and was not printing at the time. Edward Wright collaborated with Finlay on the project, creating the graphic design and layout. Graeme Murray 5.6, Ian Hamilton Finlay & The Wild Hawthorn Press, A Catalogue Raisonné 1958 - 1990, 1990, page 19. A copy of the print with 'Edition of 350' written on verso was found in the archive of Stuart Mills, Tarasque publisher, which confirms the edition size.

Ian Hamilton Finlay CBE,  Scottish 1925-2006 -  Through a Dark Wood Midway;  copper plated aluminum medallion with chain, medallion diam. 4 cm: together with two other medallions by the same artist, 'A Celebration of Earth Air Fire Water' and 'The Last Cruise of the Emden' (3) (ARR)  Note:  The text used in the first item relates to the opening lines of Dante's 'Divine Comedy': 'In the middle of the journey of our life ('Midway'), I came to myself in a dark wood". Hamilton Finlay, in his typically elegiac style, connects this text with military imagery relating and in particular the Battle of Midway in June 1942 between the American and Japanese fleets. Related works are in the Tate Collection.
