Finley - Map of United States

      Est: $500 - $1,000

This hand-colored map is from Anthony Finley's A New General Atlas, comprising a complete set of maps, representing the grand divisions of the globe... compiled from the best authorities, and corrected by the most recent discoveries. This is from the second edition of the work published in Philadelphia by the Author in 1825. It was said of this atlas: "The number of elegant maps and atlases which have come from the press within a short time in the United States, is a most flattering proof of increased attention of the community to the important study of geography. The present work contains sixty maps, about half of which are devoted to the American continent, and the remainder to other parts of the world, chiefly to Europe. The engraving is done almost uniformly with remarkable distinctness and the face of the maps is frequently beautiful, not overloaded with a confusion of useless names." (North American Review, July 1824, pp.261-262)

(Maps in Book - Atlases) A New General Atlas, Comprising a Complete Set of Maps, Representing the Grand Divisions of the Globe...

      Est: $4,750 - $6,000

First Edition of Finley's General Atlas - Complete. Atlases. Anthony Finley, A New General Atlas, Comprising a Complete Set of Maps, Representing the Grand Divisions of the Globe..., 1824 (published). Hand Color. This is the first edition of this important early American atlas, complete with 60 maps. Finley's General Atlas was very popular with the public and went through several editions from 1824-36, outselling rival atlases by Carey & Lea and H.S. Tanner. His maps were printed on high quality paper and employed an elegant engraving style with extensive topographical information that were routinely corrected and updated. Of particular interest in this edition are the maps of the trans-Appalachian west where settlements were rapidly developing on the frontier including: Mississippi. Handsome map of the state that details the county seats, roads, towns and settlements, and watershed. Development is primarily in the southern portion and mostly along the rivers with virtually no other settlements noted. Monroe is the only county in the north, which was carved out of Chickasaw Indian lands where Cotton Gin Port is located. The early U.S. government built a cotton gin here in 1801 as part of a "plan of civilization" for the Chickasaw Indians. The huge Choctaw Indians region occupies the middle section. In it are noted three missionary stations: Mayhew, Elliott and Monroe, plus the Old Agency, and Yazoom Lower Town. The map shows 18 counties, correct for about 1822, plus the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian areas. Indiana. Fine early map of the state with only 38 counties. The top third of the state is unorganized beyond the Wabash River and the Indian Boundary with reference to Ottaway, Miami, Delaware, and Pottawatomie Indians. The detailed map shows the roads, towns and settlements with most of the settlements and roads in the lower third of the state. Illinois. The continuation of the Indian Boundary from the above map of Indiana is shown in the upper portion of the state. In this area the tribal lands of the Sac & Fox, and the Winnebago Indians are noted. Below this line, the northern counties are very large with little development although Chicago and Ft. Dearborn are noted. The southern portion of the territory is more developed with a network of roads and trails connecting settlements. Also of interest is the map of the eastern United States which depict large Missouri, Arkansas, and North West territories. At the back of the atlas are the thematic charts "Comparative eights of the Principal Mountains" and "Comparative Lengths of the Principal Rivers." All maps were engraved by Young & Delleker and the ornate title page and table of contents was lettered by Joseph Perkins. Title page, table of contents, 60 maps, and 2 thematic charts. The spine has been rebacked in attractive maroon leather to match the original marbled boards with quarter leather and tips. A highly desirable atlas, especially so in the first edition.

Kentucky & Tennessee. Anthony Finley, Map of Kentucky and Tennessee Compiled from the Latest Authorities, 1828 (dated). Hand Color. This is the uncommon pocket map version of Finley's handsome map of Kentucky and Tennessee. County development in Kentucky is current to 1824, with Spencer County shown, but no sign of Edmonson, Laurel, or Russell, all of which were established in 1825. Tennessee's county development is current to 1825, reflecting the updated Franklin-Marion boundary. There is nice detail of rivers and roads. The table at top left gives 1820 population statistics divided into White, Free Blacks, and Slaves, and population growth figures from 1790 to 1820. The map folds into red leather covers with the title in gilt on the cover. An advertisement for Finley's firm appears on the paste-down. The plate was drawn by D.H. Vance and engraved by J.H. New England - United States. Anthony Finley, Map of Maine New Hampshire and Vermont, Compiled from the Latest Authorities, 1826 (dated). Hand Color. This folding version of Finley's atlas map delineates the counties, roads, limited watershed, scores of towns and villages. The "Statistical Table" gives populations by county for 1810 and 1820. Maps from Finley's folio A New American Atlas are scarce, but the 15 maps were also published in a rare pocket atlas version that is scarcer still. The maps in this issue were printed on thin paper folding into 3.5" x 6" format. This example is from an edition published between 1827 and 1830. Ristow says, "The same plates, with dates and publisher's name changed, were used by S. Augustus Mitchell in 1831 for an atlas published under the same title as Finley's 1826 volume." This map does not contain Mitchell's imprint and appears as an unrecorded edition published by Finely prior to his collaboration with Mitchell. Drawn by Vance and engraved by J. H. Young.

Anthony Finley. Astronomical Recreations: or Sketches of the Relative Position and Mythological History of the Constellations. According to the David Rumsey Map Collection, this is likely the first American celestial atlas. It was issued in the same year as Finley's first terrestrial atlas and was possibly intended to accompany it. The 117 page volume, written by Jacob Green, contains a total of 19 plates (18 in color) which were designed to "enable those who are desirous of acquiring a knowledge of the name, the position, and the classical history of the Stars, to do it without the use of the celestial globe, or a reference to the numerous volumes of Heathen Mythology." The attractive plates are reduced from the work of Johann Bode, a self-taught astronomer who served as director of the astronomical observatory of the Berlin Academy of Science for nearly 40 years. Each of the plates is accompanied by several pages of explanatory text and are organized in the following manner: constellations to the north of the zodiac (8), at the zodiac (6), and south of the zodiac (5). Includes a dedication page to James Stevenson, Mayor of Albany. Quarto, hardbound in original black quarter leather with tips over pink paper boards with paper title label on the front cover.
