Perfectly camouflaged to blend into the sun-and-shadow world of their surroundings, a mother Ocelot and her kitten listen intently to the myriad sounds emanating from the rain forest. If they are certain no danger is approaching, or that nothing worth eating is coming their way, mother and kitten will continue their respite until darkness falls and the time to hunt is at hand. Ocelots, like all cats, are highly-effective predators. Although most of their prey -- such as mice, rats and guinea pigs -- are on the small side, Ocelots will and do pursue larger quarry. SIGHT SIZE: 12 x 12 inches / 30 x 30 cm FRAME SIZE: unframed (In-House framing available) SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 55c Cheetah mint stamp issued March 8, 1997. The cheetah is best known for being the fastest of all the land mammals capable of attaining speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour! However, it displays other characteristics that make it unique not only among big cats, but in the entire cat family. Most notable is the cheetah's inability to retract its claws, as it lacks the protective sheaths possessed by all other cats. It is also considered to possess certain canine traits such as a greyhound-like build, an inability to climb trees and the ease with which it can be tamed and trained. The cheetah once inhabited the savannas and semi-deserts of Africa and Asia from Morocco to India. It is believed that this big cat is probably Asian in origin since no fossil remains have been found in Africa. Sadly, it is now extinct in much of its former range. Snow Leopards live high in the rugged, unforgiving mountains of Central Asia. These endangered cats have thick, luxuriant coats that keep them warm during the coldest weather, huge paws which allow for relatively easy travel over snow and long tails that provide the necessary balance to negotiate the rocky slopes, crevices and snow-covered surfaces of their habitat. Rarest of all big cats, Snow Leopards are shy, elusive animals and as a result little was known of their habits until recently. These snow cats, as they are sometimes called, live a solitary life, mixing with their own only to mate. Perhaps because of the harsh conditions of their environment, Snow Leopards are the only cats which have a specific breeding season. Mating occurs in late winter. After a gestation period of roughly 100 days, two to four cubs are born just as spring arrives and the weather warms. Nocturnal hunters, Snow Leopards prey on wild goats, deer, boars and a variety of small mammals. Unfortunately, they also hunt domestic livestock, which brings them in direct conflict with man. Each year several of these beautiful cats are killed by shepherds protecting their herds, adding to the leopards' decline. In addition, some furriers actively seek the beautiful smoke-gray pelts of these regal animals, sometimes using the best parts of 12 different hides to make one coat. The tiger is the largest member of the cat family, with a mature male standing over three feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 500 pounds. Despite its size, formidable strength and ferocity, the tiger is a wary creature that lives a solitary existence in jungles or forests. This caution is justified since six of the eight tiger subspecies are today either extinct or endangered. Once extending from Turkey to China, the tiger's range is now reduced to parts of India, Manchuria and Southeast Asia. Of all big cats, the tiger seems to have taken the strongest hold on mans imagination. This is demonstrated in such disparate expressions as the famous poem by William Blake that wonders at the creature's "fearful symmetry," and in the language of mountain people in northeastern China for whom the terms for tiger and God are synonymous. Equipped with large hind paws and a coat that turns white, concealing it in snow, this species of hare presents its predator with quite a challenge. The cheetah is best known for being the fastest of all the land mammals capable of attaining speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour! However, it displays other characteristics that make it unique not only among big cats, but in the entire cat family. Most notable is the cheetah's inability to retract its claws, as it lacks the protective sheaths possessed by all other cats. It is also considered to possess certain canine traits such as a greyhound-like build, an inability to climb trees and the ease with which it can be tamed and trained. The cheetah once inhabited the savannas and semi-deserts of Africa and Asia from Morocco to India. The tiger is the largest member of the cat family, with a mature male standing over three feet tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 500 pounds. Despite its size, formidable strength and ferocity, the tiger is a wary creature that lives a solitary existence in jungles or forests. This caution is justified since six of the eight tiger subspecies are today either extinct or endangered. Once extending from Turkey to China, the tiger's range is now reduced to parts of India, Manchuria and Southeast Asia. Of all big cats, the tiger seems to have taken the strongest hold on mans imagination. This is demonstrated in such disparate expressions as the famous poem by William Blake that wonders at the creature's "fearful symmetry," and in the language of mountain people in northeastern China for whom the terms for tiger and God are synonymous. The largest and fiercest cat in the Americas, the jaguar is a marvelously equipped and fearless predator. Possessing a large head and heavy body, it is somewhat similar to the leopard, but the jaguar's rosettes are concentrated along its back and have one or more distinct spots in their centers. This powerful cat is remarkably swift and agile, and is an excellent climber and swimmer. The jaguar is a solitary night hunter that preys on a wide variety of animals, both terrestrial and aquatic. It prefers sheep and cattle, but will not hesitate to attack an alligator. In ancient Mexico, a cult of the jaguar arose in the belief that one who killed the animal would assume its feat power. The cougar or puma ranges across the North American and South American continents. Second in size only to the jaguar among cats of the New World, the cougar inhabits a surprising variety of environments including deserts, jungles and mountains. In the latter habitat it is sometimes referred to as a mountain lion. Unlike true lions, cougars have no mane. These creatures also vary in color, ranging from a pale tan to a dark reddish brown, and may weigh from a minimum of 35 pounds to upwards of more than 200 pounds. Females are generally smaller. A large male may reach nine feet in length, one-third of which is tail! Like most felines, cougars are nocturnal, although some are diurnal as well, providing the areas they inhabit are undisturbed by man. Cougars have been poached in many areas because they are erroneously thought to endanger ranchers' livestock and deer populations. Although cougars subsist mainly on deer, they perform an invaluable role in weeding out the weak and injured animals, thus invigorating the remaining stock. Feasting after a successful hunt, cougars often go without eating for several days, until they can make another kill. Over 15 subspecies of cougar are known to exist and all are threatened or endangered. While the female keeps a watchful eye, a cub wrestles with its father, a practice that teaches the skills needed to survive and eventually be recognized as the "king of beasts." It is not by chance that a group of Lions is called a "pride." For centuries, man has considered the Lion one of nature's most awesome and dangerous creations. Whether as mascot or adversary, the Lion has often been linked with courage. Over 3,000 years ago, the Egyptian Pharoah Amenhotep III hunted Lions with a bow and arrow from his chariot to prove his courage. Ten thousand years ago the geographical distribution of this majestic creature covered most areas of the globe. Today, its greatly diminished population exists only in sub-Saharan Africa. The lion is unique among big cats in that it is habitually social, living in groups known as prides that have fixed, hierarchical patterns. Prides cooperate in hunting, natural protection and establishing territory. The entire pride also participates in raising the young -- a serious commitment since a young lion is almost two years old before it is completely able to survive on its own. Most of the herd will voluntarily plunge into the ford, following the leaders as they wade to dry land. However, water crossings rarely go smoothly. Once in deeper waters, drovers are faced with livestock that panic in this unfamiliar and forbidding environment.
