Howard Finster Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1916 - d. 2001

Howard Finster, American folk artist and Baptist pastor, only began his art career when was 60 years old. Born in Alabama in 1916, Finster was raised in a Baptist household and gave his first sermon as a teenager. Themes from his Christian faith, coupled with Southern storytelling traditions, later suffused many of Howard Finster's prints. Indeed, it's said a vision inspired the first of many paintings by Howard Finster, and from then until his death in 2001, he made thousands of art pieces.

Popular paintings by Howard Finster often incorporate bold images with Bible verses using only enamel paint and plywood cut into outlines of angels or animals. Yet, Howard Finster's sculptures were his crowning achievements; the largest, Paradise Garden, is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Howard Finster was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Valley Head, Alabama, and died Oct. 22, 2001, in Summerville, GA, where he created with boundless energy and consuming focus during the inspired winter of his life. Over his 25-year sacred art career, Finster managed to create 46,991 numbered works — not counting unnumbered early originals, print multiples and millions of album cover copies. This self-proclaimed "Man of Visions" was one of the best-known folk artists of the late 20th century. He was compelled to paint presidents, inventors, biblical figures and pop culture icons, eventually becoming a celebrity himself. He worked up album covers for R.E.M., Talking Heads and other bands, appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," and welcomed a steady stream of people (from regular folks to the famous, such as artist Keith Haring) who made the pilgrimage to his roadside attraction/folk art environment, Paradise Garden. On property just outside Summerville, he created this tribute to the inventions of mankind. But his captive audience couldn't miss how the crafty retired Baptist preacher used his art and endless accompanying text to try to save souls. In Jonathan Williams' book "Walks to the Paradise Garden: A Lowdown Southern Odyssey," the loquacious Finster explained Paradise Garden's genesis: "So it come to me to build a paradise and decorate it with the Bible. I went to the dump and started picking up glass and molding brick. I just saved everything but money. The Lord'd give me a picture [at] night what to do the next day… When I started on it, I wasn't expecting to excite the world… I wanted to put every verse in the Bible in this park. It's about two acres. I write what I feel God's word says… If I have to write it on a refrigerator or down on the walk out of marbles, I write it." Finster, who had held down many pulpits in Northeast Alabama and Northwest Georgia, began his artistic career in full in 1976 when a heavenly voice told him to create "sacred art." He abandoned his bicycle repair shop and began to produce thousands of paintings, numbered and dated, most with his trademark religious messages. Property of Louanne Laroche, Laroche Collection, South Carolina Description: Howard Finster (GA, 1916-2001), The Devils Vice, Signed Poster, signed lower left, unframed. 'Reverend Howard Finster, a self proclaimed “Man of Visions”, Finster was one of America’s most widely known and prolific self-taught artists producing over 46,991 pieces of art before his death in 2001. He saw himself as a sacred artist, tirelessly recording his visionary prophesies and providing glimpses of a celestial outer space world that God revealed to him. These visionary journeys were very real for Finster, providing a limitless variety of images for his creative endeavors. Born in rural Alabama in 1916, Finster went on to become a preacher, tent revivalist, and “master of 22 different trades” before building his roadside tribute to inventors the Plant Farm Museum. Later dubbed “Paradise Garden,” this rock and junk encrusted wonderland became the focus of Finster’s life work. In 1976, however, this focus shifted. As he was using his fingers to apply paint to a refurbished bicycle, Finster noticed that the paint smudge on the tip of his finger had formed a human face. A voice spoke to him, saying, “paint sacred art.” Finster began churning out thousands of sermon-laden artworks with subjects ranging from historical characters and popular culture icons like Elvis Presley to evangelistic fantasy landscapes and futuristic cities. Most works are meticulously coated in Finster’s own hand-lettered words and Biblical verse.' (Paradise Garden Foundation) Measurements: Height: 20 5/8 in. x Width: 17 1/2 in.
