Built in 1934, during the Great Depression, and named inthe hope of a brighter future, Rainbow was commissioned by Harold Vanderbilt at the Nat Herreshoff yard in Bristol. Champion of the 1934 America’s Cup, Rainbow defeated Endeavour with four wins. However, Rainbow’s win came with a host of controversy, provoking the headline, “Britannia rules the waves and America waives the rules.” Following the abandonment of the first race due to light winds, Endeavor easily won the first two races. But Rainbow triumphed in the next four races thanks to better tactics, including maneuvers that prompted unsuccessful protests to the Cup Committee. Ranger, a J-Class racing yacht, would go on to defeat Rainbow in the trials to select the America’s Cup defender for the 1937 race. Ranger then triumphantly won the 1937 America’s Cup against Endeavor II, marking the last of the J-Class yachts to take part in the race. Ranger, often referred to as a “Super J,” took yacht design to an entirely new level. Ranger was built with highly efficient construction methods to reduce cost, and symbolized the transference of aviation technology to the America’s Cup. Yankee was built as a contender for the New York Yacht Club’s defense of the 1930 America’s Cup. While not chosen as the defender in 1930, Yankee did take part in the trials for the 1934 America’s Cup, which Rainbow would go on to win.

      Richard Firth Shamrock V and Enterprise, Racing Off Newport, RI, America's Cup, 1930 Oil on Canvas 24 x 36 in Signed, inscribed verso. Shamrock V was commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton, owner of Lipton Tea, in 1929 to contest the America’s Cup race for his fifth and final time. The first J-Class yacht to be commissioned and built in the UK, she was constructed by naval architect Charles E. Nicholson. In response to Lipton’s challenge for the America’s Cup, the Americans designed, built, and launched four J-Class yachts as competitors for Shamrock V: Enterprise, Whirlwind, Yankee, and Weetamoe. Launched on April 14, 1930, Enterprise was chosen as the America’s Cup defender. Despite being well matched, Shamrock V was defeated by Enterprise in the America’s Cup 4-0. Following the America’s Cup races, Enterprise was dry docked and would never sail again.

      Oil on canvas Signed, inscribed verso. The 1958 America's Cup challenge was one of the more noteworthy in the history of the series. Previously run in 1937, World War II and economics had put a halt to the competition for 21 years, the longest drought since the series began in 1851. The J-Class yachts previously used were now prohibitively expensive to build and so the teams used "12-Meter Class" boats for the first time. Used at the 1908, 1912, and 1920 Olympics, these boats measured 65 to 75 feet in length with masts approximately 85 feet tall, though builders were now allowed to experiment with all other variables as long as they added up to less than 12 meters. In the long-awaited build up for the return of the race, the preview was featured on the cover of the September 15, 1958, issue of Sports Illustrated. With the race itself taking place off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, President Eisenhower and his wife watched from the USS Mitscher destroyer. The Royal Yacht Squadron's Sceptre was no match for the New York Yacht Club's Columbia, falling in the race 4-0. Richard M. Firth (British, b. 1954) Producing only eight or nine paintings per year, Firth is becoming one of the most sought after marine scene artists currently working. While mainly self-taught, Firth received instruction from well-known marine painter Brian May once he began painting marine subjects such as square riggers. He has exhibited at the prestigious Ferens Museum and Art Gallery in Hull, England.

      Richard Firth Endeavour and Rainbow, America's Cup, 1934 $7,000 - $9,000 The 1934 America?s Cup was one of the most controversial in the history of the event. Before the series began, Thomas Sopwith had to fire his professional crew over a pay dispute and hire a group of amateurs from the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. With the Endeavor in the lead in the first race, officials were forced to interrupt by a drop in wind, though the Endeavor would win the leg two days later and capture the second leg of the series. In the third race, the crew of the Endeavor thought they missed a buoy and in a correction attempt, steered directly into the path of the Rainbow, costing them the race. In the fourth, the Endeavor is forced to bear up in order to avoid a collision and raises a flag in protest that was not accepted by the committee. Tied at two races, the Rainbow brings on a new sailmaker and uses a sail from the Yankee to take a victory. In the sixth leg, Endeavor takes the lead in a triangle shaped course before the Rainbow passes it halfway through, leading the Rain to a 4-2 win in the series. This race was the closest the British would come to winning the America?s Cup since 1851.

Oil on canvas, 30” x 50” Signed $30,000. – 40,000. In 1930 Yankee was launched as one of four J-Class yachts built to defend the America’s Cup. Designed by Frank Paine and launched from Lawley & Sons yard in Bristol, Connecticut, the Yankee was regarded as the best all-rounder of the four. Not quite as fine-tuned as the others, she lost out, and with slight modifications came back to compete for the defender spot again in 1934. Losing again, she was sold by her original ownership syndicate, which included former Secretary of the Navy and America’s Cup Hall of Fame member Charles Francis Adams III, to Gerald Lambert. Lambert took her across the Atlantic to race in England where she became the only American J-Class yacht to do so. In 32 races in England she had eight first-place finishes before being scrapped in 1941 with proceeds going to the war effort. Britannia was built for King Edward VII and then served for King George V. Launched in 1893, she had perhaps the most successful racing yacht career of all time. In 635 starts, she won 231 first prizes and 129 other prizes before being scuttled in 1936 in accordance with George V’s dying wish for her to follow him to his grave. Launched in 1910, Westward was a superstar of the golden age of big-class racing. The largest Class-A racing schooner of her time, Westward was hailed by author Peter Heaton as “perhaps the most famous of all racing schooners.” She met Britannia no fewer than 174 times and George V was once heard to declare “Whatever we do to Britannia, we must beat that damned schooner,” referring to Westward

Sir Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith built Endeavour to mount his challenge for the 1934 America’s Cup. Endeavour, 130 feet long and rigged to carry 7,560 square feet of sail, was considered the best J-class boat of her day and came extremely close to winning the Cup races of 1934. Skippered by Sopwith himself and using a double-clewed jib designed by him, she was defeated by the American defender Rainbow by only the narrowest of margins. Shamrock V was the last in a line of racing yachts with which the wealthy Sir Thomas Lipton made five unsuccessful challenges for the elusive America’s Cup between 1899 and 1930. The fifth and last Shamrock, designed and built by Camper & Nicholson at Gosport in 1930, had a 134-ton displacement. Measuring 119 feet in length with a 20-foot beam, she carried 7,540 square feet of sail and seemed more than a match for the American defender Enterprise right up until the first of the Cup’s races on Sept. 13, 1930. Enterprise won the series convincingly, and Lipton died the following year, having never brought home the “Auld Mug” (as the America’s Cup trophy is affectionately called). The two yachts are captured here, sailing between the Isle of Wight and mainland England. Though neither managed to capture the America’s Cup from the New York Yacht Club, impressively both are still afloat and competing today.

      Oil on canvas, 18” x 27” Signed, inscribed verso The Rhode Island-built Vigilant won the eighth America’s Cup in 1893 for the United States, defeating Valkyrie II. Owned by a syndicate including August Belmont Jr. and Cornelius Vanderbilt, she later was purchased by Howard Gould and became the first America’s Cup defender to sail in Europe during the British yachting season. HMY Britannia was built in 1893 for Edward, Prince of Wales, later to be crowned King Edward VII. In her first year of racing, she won 33 of 43 starts. The Britannia and Vigilant squared off in the Mount’s Bay Regatta on July 28, 1894, piloted by two brothers: Benjamin Nicholls aboard the Vigilant and Phillip Nicholls of Britannia. The Britannia won by seven minutes. In 16 races against each other, the Britannia won 12. After the death of King George V, Edward’s son, Britannia was towed near the Isle of Wright and sunk by the HMS Winchester, in accordance with the monarch’s wishes.

      The America’s Cup 1934, Endeavour and Rainbow Racing off Rhode Island The American teams had a stranglehold on the America’s Cup by the time the 1934 event came around, having never lost the world’s most famous yacht race. Sir Thomas Sopwith sought to bring the cup back to Great Britain when he commissioned the Endeavor, a J-class yacht built to challenge the American team’s Rainbow. Before departing for America, Sopwith’s crew went on strike over their pay, and at the last second Sopwith recruited a group of amateurs from the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club to take over. The ragtag group captured the first two races before falling to the Rainbow in a controversial series 4-2, the closest the British had gotten to reclaiming the cup and the closest anyone came to knocking off the Americans until the Australians did it in 1983.

      BRITANNIA AND LULWORTH RACING OFF THE ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON Purchased by Sir A. Mortimer Singer - the son of the inventor of the sewing machine, she was renamed Lulworth, a name she retains to this day. A splendid boat from the start, she nevertheless came into her own under Alexander Paton's colors and became a familiar and successful competitor at Cowes during the final years of King George V's long patronage. Ironically, Britannia (the King's yacht) and Lulworth were both laid up after the 1935 season, the former never to sail again due to the King's death in January 1936, the latter for sale to Mr. Carl Bendix who kept her until the World War II.

      BRITANNIA AND LULWORTH RACING OFF THE ROYAL YACHT SQUADRON Britannia was built in 1893 for King Edward VII when he was still Prince of Wales. She was undoubtedly the most famous racing cutter of her era. Hugely successful, she won 33 out of 39 starts in her maiden season and competed against the fastest yachts of the day. Her second racing career commenced when King George V refitted her for big class competitions in 1921. Under the King's ownership, Britannia was wildly successful. Despite being re-rigged seven times, her hull shape was so efficient that she remained competitive until the big J-class boats introduced in the 1930s outclassed her. Lulworth was designed and built in 1920 for Mr. R. H. Lee. She was originally christened Terpsichore and rigged as a cutter.
