      Est: $100 - $150

Lot 39 Stephen Fisher (b. 1954) First Light (1982-1987) Etching Signed lower right, Edition Artist proof, from edition of 20 3.375” x 3.375” inches No, matted inches Donated by Charles M. Young of Charles M. Young Fine Prints & Drawings LLC This item ships from NY 11201 Fisher’s etching, First Light, represents a scene in which the tree branches appear to be blowing in the wind. Fisher creates extraordinary depth through shades of gray and intentional composition. The depth allows for the heightened illusion of a dense, intimidating forest. ,,Of his landscapes, Fisher says, “While still life situations are self consciously controlled, landscape presents an endless supply of unpredictable combinations of visual elements.” It can be difficult to determine a structural order from an environment that is constantly changing. Thus, Fisher’s landscapes are manipulated to an extent in order to intensify the concepts of perception and illusion. In spite of these concepts, somehow Fisher’s landscapes are, as he expresses, still just “dirt on paper.” ,,~ Marie Kessel, Recent Graduate of New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Bachelor of Arts in Art Law, Center for Art Law Spring 2021 Graduate Intern. Artist's Biography Stephen Fisher was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and he now resides permanently in Rhode Island. His introduction to art occurred in his pre-teenage years when he began to take correspondence school art lessons in exchange for sacrificing playing the trumpet. Fisher earned his undergraduate degree in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale. He taught at five different colleges until he became a Professor of Art at Rhode Island College. ,,Drawing and printmaking are Fisher’s primary modes, often creating still life or landscape works. Fisher states, “Common to all of the work is my obsession with intense perceptual rigor, compositional manipulation, the viscosity of light, and the tactile, sensual nature of materials.” In addition to those principles, Fisher’s work stems from the principles of observation, representation, and transcendence.
