BIOGRAPHY: Harrington Fitzgerald, an artist of panoramic landscape and marine works, was born in Philadelphia, April 5, 1847, the son of Thomas And Sarah (Riter) Levering. He began a career in business as a cashier but failing eyesight compelled him to rest for a year. He then found employment with a local newspaper, the "Philadelphia Item", eventually becoming business manager, managing editor and proprietor.Fitzgerald became interested in art as a relaxation in the 1860's. In Philadelphia he first studied drawing and composition under George W. Holmes, one of the teachers of Thomas Eakins and James B. Sword. He also studied with George W. Nicholson and John Singer Sargent, and later continued his studies under Eugene Isabey, Mariano Fortuny and Jean Leon Gerome in Paris and Rome.As an artist he participated in many exhibitions throughout the United States, including the Buffalo Exposition in 1901, the two Omaha Expositions, the St. Louis Exposition in 1904, the Charleston Exposition where he was awarded a medal, and the American Art Society where he was awarded a gold medal.He was also an ardent supporter of the arts, belonging to several local artistic societies in addition to being President of the American Art Society. The artist also possessed a large and valuable art collection.He died September 16, 1930, in Williamstown, Pennsylvania.Work by Fitzgerald may be found in the collections of the Albright Gallery, Buffalo, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art and the Smithsonian. A large work by Fitzgerald was formerly in the Haussner collection in Baltimore.

S. Sargent, and who was managing editor of the Philadelphia Item for 30 years. Early 20th c American. Provenance: Robert A Goldstein. Size: panel is 10.675" X 4.75", frame is 13.25" X 7.5". CONDITION: Small gouge in paint surface in center left, otherwise fine; frame has some wear.
