FitzGerald 1890-1956: A Memorial Exhibition (catalogue), The Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, 1958, unpaginated.Note:FitzGerald was born in Winnipeg and, except for a short time spent in New York at the Art Students' League during the winter of 1921, he spent his entire life on the prairies. As a prairie painter, it was light and space which were the subject of his landscapes. In the artist's notes published in the catalogue for his memorial exhibition, FitzGerald alludes to the fecund opportunity provided by his native land, one that non-Manitobans may be quick to dismiss. He remarked: "It naturally requires more thought and concentration to discover the beauty in a common thing, but the very search reveals the artist to himself in a more intense way." Such commentary speaks to a man who is described by those who knew him well as "intensive rather than extensive," an artist whose output was a result of contemplation, concentration and a willingness to reflect.Estimate: $6,000-8,000

LIONEL LEMOINE FITZGERALDNUDE STUDYoil on panelsigned with initials 5.75 ins x 5 ins; 15.2 cms x 12.7 cms Provenance:Private Collection, MontrealNote:In this seated nude study, FitzGerald is chiefly preoccupied with form, shape and colour, and not with the specifics of who his subject is, or what she is doing. Many other examples by him exist of relaxed female subjects sometimes posed reading and it is possible that this activity introduced a natural curviness to the subject's posture that FitzGerald enjoyed painting. While we do not know the identity of the subject, the dimensions of the picture may suggest a certain intimacy with the sitter.Estimate: $4,000-6,000

Vinia Hoogstraten, CBC Morning Comment broadcast, November 18, 1959.Helen Coy, FitzGerald as Printmaker: A Catalogue Raisonné of the First Completed Exhibition of the Printed Works, University of Manitoba Press, Winnipeg, 1982, page 40.Christine Lalonde, Beauty in a Common Thing: Drawings and Prints by L. L. FitzGerald, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 2004, page 43.Note:Throughout his life, nature was FitzGerald’s main source of inspiration and study. Trees, specifically, came to be a symbol of growth, life and the interconnectedness of all living things. FitzGerald’s belief in the oneness of nature frequently resulted in comparisons between trees and the human body, especially in regards to their graceful, linear forms, and often led his trees to take on an anthropomorphic quality. In a letter to close friend and fellow artist, Bertram Brooker, FitzGerald once wrote that a tree “gives me a greater feeling of life than a human body…I rarely feel so free in social intercourse with humans as with trees.” FitzGerald’s former students at the Winnipeg School of Art have elaborated on these connections, stating: “Branches to us are not outcroppings of wood. They’re limbs flowing with muscular space from the trunk... [FitzGerald] said once that an artist could spend his whole life trying to capture the perfection of one branch.”

LIONEL LEMOINE FITZGERALDSTILL-LIFE WITH APPLEoil on canvas, mounted to card 11.5 ins x 10 ins; 29.2 cms x 25.4 cms Provenance:Private Collection, Aurora, OntarioNote:In Still-Life with Apple, it is easy to see the influence of Cézanne, whose work FitzGerald once claimed to be his greatest help. FitzGerald first saw Cézanne’s works in person in 1930, during a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and began incorporating Cézanne’s pictorial devices into his still lifes in the late 1940s. Much like Cézanne, the tabletop in the work is tilted forward and the background space compressed, which seems to push the piece of fruit towards the picture plane and the viewer. Apples were one of FitzGerald’s favourite subjects and provided an endless source of formal investigation. He returned to this subject again and again.

Despite numerous travels within Canada, Mexico and the United States, the artist remained rooted in Manitoba for all of his life. FitzGerald's first one-man exhibition was held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1921, where he presented a series of prairie landscapes. "He was particularly attracted to the Prairie landscape. Its minimal topography suited his pared-down aesthetic." In this painting, FitzGerald softly renders the warmth of a summer's day. Through the hazy mood of the prairie light, the scene is dreamlike and ethereal. The artist dollops the strong blue sky with a delicate meringue of clouds. The hearty grain silos and trees that dot the Saskatchewan landscape are transformed into soft layers of mint, pink and ochre tulle. As FitzGerald once remarked, "the prairie has many aspects, but intense light and the feeling of great space are dominating characteristics."

Later into his career, his style became more abstract: muted colours, swirling across the page in dynamic, Pointillist formations. FitzGerald's abstract art had a profound influence on Bertram Brooker (lots 104 & 119), whom he first met in 1929.

LIONEL LEMOINE FITZGERALDA GLIMPSE OF THE LAKE, CA. 1920, 35 ins x 46.5 ins; 88.9 cms x 118.1 cmsProvenance:Loch Mayberry Gallery, WinnipegPrivate Collection, WinnipegNote:This large canvas by FitzGerald conveys much about early influences on this artist and as such is an important work by a painter whose major canvases rarely appear at auction. This work bears a close compositional relationship to a work entitled Late Fall, Manitoba, 1918 in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada though this lot is slightly larger. Unlike so many other renowned Canadian artists of his generation, FitzGerald did not study abroad and his knowledge of movements, such as Impressionism, was acquired from secondary sources such as art publications. FitzGerald distilled the essentials from the information he was able to access and began applying Impressionist techniques to the prairie landscape of his native province.
