        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Gustav Edolf Fjaestad (Swedish, 1868-1948) Vinterlandskap med frusen sjö (Winter landscape with frozen lake), 1945 Oil on Masonite 30 x 42-1/2 inches (76.2 x 108.0 cm) Signed and dated lower right: G Fjaestad 45 PROVENANCE: Bukowskis, Stockholm, June 4, 2019, lot 470; Private collection, Ridgway, Colorado, acquired from the above. Gustaf Adolf Fjæstad was one of the leading Swedish painters at the turn of the 20th century, celebrated for his masterful winter scenes which recorded the snowbound forests and picturesque frozen lakes of Värmland in western Sweden, an area known for its fierce winter storms. He was also a successful graphic artist, noted tapestry designer, and cabinetmaker. After training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm (1891-92) and the Konstnärsförbundets skola (1893), he worked as the assistant to Bruno Liljefors on his decorative projects at the Stockholm Biological Museum, and collaborated with Carl Larsson on the murals now at the Stockholm National Museum. In 1897 Fjæstad moved to Värmland, where he spent most of his life, and founded the Racken Group of artists, named after the Racken lake near Arvika. There he also joined theosophical groups. Interestingly, art was a "second career" of sorts for Fjæstad. An exceptional athlete who had been a champion ice skater, Fjæstad held the 1891 world record for skating the fastest English mile. In the present work as well as in others that feature frozen lakes painted in obsessive detail, vestiges of his love of ice skating can be seen; etched onto the ice are the swirling tracks which skaters have left behind. Note: Gustaf Fjaestad was an important Swedish Impressionist painter known for his evocative landscapes of the areas around Varmland (near Karlstadt). Born in Stockholm, he studied with Carl Larsson, and was his assistant in finishing the frescoes at the Svenska National Museum. Interested in the Folk Art of Sweden, he founded the Rackstad Colony in Värmland with his wife, Kerstin Maja Fjaestad. GUSTAF FJÆSTAD

        Est: CHF20,000 - CHF30,000

GUSTAF FJÆSTAD (Stockholm 1868–1948 Arvika) Winterlandscape. 1908. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left: G. Fjaestad 08. 142.8 × 185 cm. Provenance: - Auction Dr. Fritz Nagel, Stuttgart, 1971. - German private collection, purchased at the above auction. The painter, tapestry designer and carpenter Gustaf Fjæstad was born on 22 December 1868 in Stockholm. Fjæstad was one of the leading Swedish painters at the turn of the 20th century. After studying art, he assisted Bruno Liljefors in creating depictions of animals at the Biological Museum in Stockholm and then Carl Larsson in completing frescoes at the National Museum of Stockholm. In 1898 Fjæstad married the young artist Maria Hellén. In search of unspoiled landscapes, endless forests and glittering lakes, the couple moved to Lake Racken in the Värmland province the same year. Gradually, the couple's artist friends also settled at Lake Racken, which led to the founding of the Racken Group artists' colony. The Swedish artist received his first public recognition for his landscape paintings at an exhibition in Stockholm in 1898. In 1908 he presented his first solo exhibition. The snow-covered landscapes of Värmland with its frost-covered fields, lakes and streams soon became Fjæstad’s signature theme. The artist developed an unusual technique in which he coated his canvases with light-sensitive chemicals, projected photographs onto them and used them as a guide for his paintings. Many of his works can be admired in the Swedish National Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. On 17 July 1948, Gustaf Fjæstad died in Arvika. --------------- GUSTAF FJÆSTAD (Stockholm 1868–1948 Arvika) Winterlandschaft. 1908. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten links signiert und datiert: G. Fjæstad 08. 142,8 × 185 cm. Provenienz: - Auktion Dr. Fritz Nagel, Stuttgart, 1971. - Deutsche Privatsammlung, an obiger Auktion erworben. Gustaf Fjæstad wird am 22. Dezember 1868 in Stockholm geboren. Juli 1948 stirbt Gustaf Fjæstad in Arvika. Er zählt zu den führenden schwedischen Malern an der Wende des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1916, no. 85. note:/span Gustaf Fjaestad was one of the leading members of the Rackstad colony of artists based in Varmland, Sweden. Led by the sculptor Christian Eriksson, Fjaestad and fellow Swedes, including Bjorn Ahlgrensson and Fritz Lindstrom, the Rackstad artists worked primarily in the first part of the 20th century and focused their efforts on depicting the local landscapes. They drew their inspiration from picturesque surroundings of Lake Racken, just north of the small town of Arvika, where Fjaestad and the other group members settled. Fjaestad was not only a highly accomplished and prolific painter, he also designed rugs and tapestries and was a furniture craftsman. The present work falls neatly within the artist's oeuvre: a realistically rendered undisturbed snow covered landscape with a partially frozen lake bank in the foreground shimmering with reflections. Typically devoid of figures, Fjaestad's painterly canvases have an almost pointillist quality and capture the pristine solitude of the Swedish countryside.

In Canada, he and other Scandinavian artists influenced the Group of Seven and in particular, Lawren Harris. As the Vancouver Art Gallery's biography of Harris relates, "Around 1915, Lawren Harris and his colleagues found resolve in the example of Scandinavian artists such as Fjaestad, who combined an awareness of issues of verisimilitude with a strong sense of design." This painting was acquired in 1928 when it was on display at The Swedish Art Exhibition that took place in Riga, Latvia at The City Art Museum. Please note: this work is unframed.
