          H. Peabody Flagg (American, 1859-1937) Painting. Title - Lowland Pasture. Oil on canvas pastoral landscape painting. Signed H. Peabody Flagg 1916. Titled on the back, Lowland Pasture. Measures 16 inches high, 24 inches wide. Original frame measures 21.5 inches high, 29.5 inches wide. In good condition. The text below is edited from Men of Progress: One Thousand Biographical Sketches and Portraits of Leaders ...(editor Edwin Monroe Bacon), pg 477: His education was acquired in the public schools of Charlestown and Wakefield. At the age of eighteen he entered the Massachusetts Normal Art School in Boston, where he remained two years. In 1881 he went abroad, and there further pursued his art studies for three years, studying in Paris at Julian's, under Boulanger and Lefebvre the first year and the succeeding two years under Carolus Duran. Returning to Boston in 1884, he at once opened his studio, painting in oil and water colors, and exhibiting throughout the country. Among his most important pictures are three painted in Brittany, entitled La Plage at Concarneau, A Rainy Day at Quimperle and Market Day at Concarneau, and one called Old Fish Houses at Port Lorne, Nova Scotia. He has been most successful with street scenes. Of his work in general a well-known Boston critic has written: Mr. Flagg's street scenes possess a fine local feeling. They are more than memoranda, yet retain the graphic first impressions coupled with the studied phases. This same fidelity is notice-able in his landscape watercolors. He never fails to give us the surface of the broad fields in true perspective and coloring, and one cannot but appreciate his artistic compositions. Besides all these features, so essential in good art, his painting qualities are ever evident, so that, all told, we have worthy results, good pictures, poetic and valuable transcripts from nature. In 1892, a fire occurred in the building in which he had his studio. Mr. Flagg suffered the loss of all his pictures there, studio effects, and valuable sketches which represented years of hard work. He was a member of the Boston Art Club since 1884 and a member of the Paint and Clay Club for some time. He was married August 13, 1887 to Miss Julia L. Horther, of Boston. They had no children.

His parents were Ephraim and Betsy (Stevens) Flagg. As a young man he worked in the mills of Lawrence and Lowell, and afterwards learned the iron founder's trade, working in Hingham and East Boston. In 1849, he went to California, sailing from Boston January 11, arriving at San Francisco July 6, and passing through many thrilling experiences in the gold mines. Mr. Flagg returned to Boston, via Isthmus of Panama and New York. He married Laura Peabody in Lowell, August 31, 1852, and they lived in Somerville and Charlestown about six years in each place. In 1868, Mr. Flagg retired from business, coming to Wakefield, where he purchased a farm at the head of Lake Quannapowitt, after which he attended to his personal affairs, going to Boston regularly and looking after his real estate interests. Mrs. Flagg died August 1, 1887. Mr. Flagg died ten years later, August 23, 1897, aged 79 years, 5 months and 9 days. Mr. Flagg left a daughter, Mrs. Laura E. Gowing of Wakefield, and 3 sons, Hiram Peabody Flagg, the artist, Charles S. Flagg and George Arthur Flagg. Mr. Flagg was a Mason and an Odd Fellow, although not connected with any lodge of either organization at the time of his death. - From a typed biography by a former librarian of the Society of California Pioneers, n.d.
