        Jared B. Flagg, a large portrait of James S.T. Stranahan in it's original frame, the aged Stranahan in black with a white shirt, sitting in a leather upholstered chair with twist turned arm supports, a window at his right with a view of a landscape at dusk with rendering of the statue erected in Prospect Park in honor of his contributions seen in the foreground, and the sunset silhouetting the distant mountains, signed" Jared B. Flagg 1896" at lower right, and contained in a large, gilt, cavetto molded frame, the molding with parallel reeding, acanthus corners, and laurel border. The painting is accompanied by a substantial trove of research into the life of James Stranahan, compiled by the consignor.

        oil on canvas, signed and dated 1898 at center left, inscribed on the verso Emma Vincent Sherman / 1898, presented in the likely original gilt composition frame. SS 26.5 x 21.5 in.; DOA 40.5 x 35.5 in. Jared Flagg studied under his uncle, Washington Allston, and exhibited his first portrait at the National Academy of Design at the age of 16. He was elected a full member of the Academy in 1849 and exhibited regularly throughout his life. Portraits were his speciality, and he was sought after by many prominent families of New York and Connecticut, including the Vanderbilts. Mrs. Sherman (1854-1937) was related by marriage to the Flagg family.

[Provenance: Jared B. Flagg enjoyed a successful career in Hartford, supported by prominent citizens throughout the area. Among them was John McClellan (1767-1858) of Woodstock, CT, who served as a Major of the militia during the Revolution. McClellan was also a member of the Connecticut legislature for twenty years. This portrait descended in the Flagg family until it was given to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in 1899. Deaccessioned from the Wadsworth Atheneum (gift of the Artist's family, 1899), sold to benefit acquisition funds.]
