Painter, Sculptor, b. 1934 - d. 2005

Artist Jean-Michel Folon was born in 1934 in Brussels. After studying architecture, Folon took a different direction and focused on painting and drawing. His artwork has been described as humoristic and surreal. He covered a wide range of mediums, including producing illustrations for Kafka's Metamorphosis and The New Yorker as well as watercolors and engravings. Select Jean-Michel Folon posters were used by Amnesty International for their 1988 Declaration of Human Rights program.

As an artist, Jean-Michel Folon was the first to create end credits for a French television channel in 1975. One of his most successful exhibitions was in 1990 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Jean-Michel Folon's prints are very popular and can be found furnishing the walls of many stylish French apartments. La sculpture « Un Homme » en pierre jaune du Pakistan donne vie à l'emblématique personnage de Folon, présent tout au long de son œuvre, depuis ses premiers dessins des années 1960 jusqu'à ses sculptures, sans oublier le célèbre générique d'Antenne 2. Il incarne une figure universelle, un « Monsieur-tout-le-monde » auquel chacun peut s'identifier. L'artiste belge Jean-Michel Folon (1934-2005) se tourne vers la statuaire monumentale dans les années 1990, d'abord en bronze, puis, à partir de 1996, en pierre. Il choisit des matériaux spectaculaires, souvent peu employés en sculpture, comme cette pierre jaune du Pakistan, particulièrement lumineuse.
Par cette approche éminemment personnelle du matériau brut, Folon cherche à créer un dialogue entre la forme sculptée et la pierre.
