From Galerie Contemporaine Littéraire, Artistique volume 2. émile de Girardin (1802-81) was a French journalist, publisher and politician. He was the most successful and flamboyant French journalist of the era, presenting himself as a promoter of mass education through mass journalism. His magazines reached over a hundred thousand subscribers, and his inexpensive daily newspaper La Presse undersold the competition by half, thanks to its cheaper production and heavier advertising. Like most prominent journalists, Girardin was deeply involved in politics, and served in parliament.

Alexandre Dumas fils (1824-95) was a French author and playwright, best known for the romantic novel La Dame aux Camélias (The Lady of the Camellias), published in 1848, which was adapted into Giuseppe Verdi's opera La Traviata (The Fallen Woman), as well as numerous stage and film productions, usually titled Camille in English-language versions. The Son of Alexandre Dumas.
