JOAN FONTCUBERTA (Barcelona, 1955). "Fraser #32", series Garden of mummies, 2001. Photograph. Edition of 2 copies. Work cataloged in "Jardín de momias", Joan Fontcuberta, p. 38-39. Attached catalog "Garden of mummies", Joan Fontcuberta. Signed and dated on the back. Measurements: 80 x 120 cm. Taken in Canada and published at the Adriada Schmidt Gallery, the series of photographs "Garden of Mummies" are, according to Joan Fontcuberta himself, "in reality trees prepared to resist the Canadian winter". Thus, his photographs symbolize the enclosed space, the solitude, alluding to the pharaonic mummies and how Egyptologists felt during their discoveries. Artist, teacher, essayist, critic and art promoter specialized in photography, Joan Fontcuberta has developed a successful career, which has earned him awards such as the David Octavius Hill by the Fotografisches Akademie GDL of Germany (1988), the appointment of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture in France (1994), and the National Prize of Photography, awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Spain (1998). A graduate in Information Sciences, Fontcuberta is a professor of Audiovisual Communication Studies at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts, USA). He also collaborates with various publications specializing in image. In 1980 he co-founded the magazine "PhotoVIsion", where he was editor-in-chief. As a promoter of events related to the art of photography, he has organized the Jornadas Catalanas de Fotografía, collaborated in the constitution of the Primavera Fotográfica de Barcelona, and has curated important exhibitions in Madrid, New York, Barcelona, Marseille, etc. His extensive photographic work is characterized by the use of computer tools in its treatment, and by its interactive presentation with the viewer. His language represents a critical vision of reality, photographic, historical or fictitious truths through photography and its context. Between 1985 and 2001, Fontcuberta's work has been exhibited in more than thirty museums and art galleries in Europe, North America and Japan, notably the MoMA in New York, the Folkwang Museum in Essen, the IVAM in Valencia, the Parco Gallery in Tokyo, the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona, the Redpath in Montreal, the Musée de l'Élysée in Lausanne, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao and many others. Est: €1,500 - €2,000

JOAN FONTCUBERTA (Barcelona, 1955). "Orogenesis: Tongue", 2003. Photograph (selenium toned silver gelatin print), copy 15/25. Signed, titled, dated and numbered by hand. Size: 80,5 x 120 cm. In this series by Joan Fontcuberta, the starting point are paintings by Dalí that are subjected to computer programmes for translating topographical plans into three-dimensional images. Originally, this type of programme had a military use. The result of these orogenesis are a sort of hybrid landscapes between the pictorial-photographic tradition and the computer, between the natural and the artificial, between the old and the new. Fontcuberta's work involves both the crisis of the photographic technique and the crisis of the archive, and he also stresses how the refinement of these computer programmes threatens the iconic status of photography as a literal transcription of reality. Artist, teacher, essayist, critic and art promoter specialising in photography, Joan Fontcuberta has developed a successful career, which has earned him awards such as the David Octavius Hill by the Fotografisches Akademie GDL in Germany (1988), the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (1994), and the National Photography Prize, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture (1998). JOAN FONTCUBERTA (Barcelona, 1955). "Pin Zhuang", 2004.

          Est: €1,000 - €1,200

JOAN FONTCUBERTA (Barcelona, 1955). "Pin Zhuang", 2004. Comprises: a thermoformed container, an artist's book together with an original text written by Jorge Luis Marzo, a DVD, eight photographic prints and a sculpture entitled Tiger Zhuang II made up of 21 pieces belonging to the 1:32 scale model of the F-5E Tiger II fighter plane, which the user can build following the author's proposals. Copy 63/100. Publisher's page, hand signed and numbered. Measurements: 44 x 32 x 42 cm (box). Joan Fontcuberta is inspired by a real event that took place in April 2001, when an American aircraft, which was violating the airspace of the People's Republic of China, collided with a Chinese army fighter. The Chinese authorities seized the sophisticated US aircraft, which only after arduous negotiations was returned, albeit piece by piece. Pin Zhuang in Chinese means 'disassembly' or 'jigsaw'. The idea of undoing and redoing an object from its fragments takes us back to the childhood experience of Meccanoes and dismountable models. With this symbolic gesture, on the one hand, those technological devices that are paradigms of power and violence become harmless objects, a kind of poetic sculptures that pay tribute to the aesthetics of science fiction while critically alluding to the threatening "defence" programmes of the great war powers. On the other hand, the game of disobeying instructions turns these flying ready-mades not only into the object of an aesthetic experience of play and the combination of forms, but also into a pretext for confrontation between authority and subversion, between order and dissidence, between rule and daring. JOAN FONTCUBERTA (1955 - ) Le Chant des Oiseaux. Selenium-toned silver photogram on painted vinyl wallpaper, the image measuring 482.6x387.4 mm; 19x15 1/4 inches, the mount 558.8x457.2 mm; 22x18 inches, with Foncuberta's signature and date, in pencil, on mount recto. 1989. From a series exhibited at Zabriskie Gallery, New York titled "Joan Fontcuberta: Paper Gardens," April 10-May 22, 1991. Fontcuberta was exhibited by Galerie Zabriskie, Paris as early as 1983. A disrupter, an activist, and a provocateur, Fontcuberta is perhaps best understood as a conceptual artist. His diverse body of work uses photography--the artistic medium most frequently associated with a neutral truth--and creates believable fictions, elaborate hoaxes, and beautiful alternate realities. At its core, each of his multi-layered series question authority and our relationship with subjective truth, in imagery that is at times pesudo-documentary, at times Surrealist, and at times lyrically beautiful. Born in Barcelona, Spain, Fontcuberta is the recipient of the Hasselblad Award. His best known series are titled Fauna, 1987 (which purports to discover a zoologist's work and catalogues unusual animals) and Sputnik, 1997 (which investigates a Russian cosmonaut's disappearance).
