      Andre Fontenay (French, 1913-1983) Painting. Title - Le Moulin Rouge. Colorful oil on canvas painting of the famous cabaret in Paris, France. Signed lower right Andre Fontenay de Saint Affrique. Artist inscribed, dated 1973 on reverse. Painting measures 21.5 inches high, 25.75 inches wide. Frame measures 25.5 inches high, 30 inches wide. In good condition with light inpainting in the sky. Andre Fontenay was a French painter born in Paris in 1913. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and later at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. He exhibited his works for the first time in 1937 at the Salon des Tuileries. In 1940, Fontenay was captured by the Germans and spent five years as a prisoner of war. During this time, he continued to paint, and some of his works were smuggled out of the camp and exhibited in Paris. After the war, Fontenay became a professor at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, where he taught until 1979. He also continued to exhibit his works, including at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d'Automne. Fontenay's paintings were known for their bright colors and bold lines, often depicting landscapes and still lifes. He was influenced by the Fauvist and Expressionist movements, and his works are characterized by their expressive brushstrokes and vibrant colors.
