          Apr. 06, 2024

WALTON FORD WATERCOLOR, GREAT AUK STUDY FOR STAC AN ARMIN

          Est: $50,000 - $70,000

FORD, Walton (American, b. 1960). Great Auk Study for Stac an Armin, 2021. Watercolor, pen and ink on paper signed ‘W.F’ l.r. 12" x 9" sheet, 19 3/4" x 17 3/4" framed. To call Walton Ford’s work cinematic is a vast understatement. Ford’s captivating compositions are a mode of storytelling that is unapologetically authentic in their bold and brash approach to subjects others blatantly evade in favor of more easily palatable topics. Never shying away from “touchy” issues, the artist faces them head-on through the lens of natural history. Why? Natural history painting is often viewed as relatively innocuous – relegated to the intersection of art and science. As Ford attests in both his art and commentary, expeditions in the guise of science and colonialism are intimately tied to flora and fauna. We are pleased to offer two preparatory drawings of an auk and heron for Walton Ford’s monumental works Stac an Armin and Vespers. Ford’s work can be found in a number of distinguished private and public collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

          WALTON FORD AQUATINT, PESTVOGEL

          Est: $16,000 - $22,000

FORD, Walton (Born 1960). Pestvogel. Hard ground, soft ground, aquatint, spit bite, sugar lift, drypoint on Somerset Satin Paper. 2016. 27 3/4" x 21 5/8" image, 44" x 34 1/2" framed. Waxwing invasions are one of those natural dramas that seem to force themselves upon our attention. In Europe they were recorded as early as 1552 in the vicinity of the Rhine by the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner. Such was the impact of these sudden, inexplicable arrivals that Bohemian Waxwings were once loaded with sinister import (although none of these baleful associations seem to have attached to the Cedar Waxwing in America). Old names for the species included 'Pestvogel' ('plague-bird') which is still the bird's name in Dutch, as well as 'unglückvogel, pestilenzvogel, and todtenvogel' in German-speaking areas (respectively, 'disaster-bird', 'pestilence-bird' and 'death bird'). A widely recorded waxwing invasion during the winter of 1913/14 was later assumed to be a foreboding omen for the calamity that ensued the following summer - the First World War. (Mark Cocker, Birds and People, London: Jonathan Cape, 2013, p 407.) Turning the work of naturalist and painter John James Audubon on its head, Walton Ford imbues the flora and fauna in his own watercolors and prints with sex, violence, and melodrama. His aim is to satirically comment on the history of colonialism, slavery, and other forms of oppression. The beauty and naturalism of his meticulously rendered scenes belie their comedic grotesqueness. As he explains, “I think that there’s almost no subject that you can’t treat with some humor, no matter how brutal it can seem.”

          Walton Ford "Nantes" Print 2009

          Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Walton Ford (American, b. 1960). Engraving, drypoint, and aquatint on wove paper titled "Nantes" depicting a monkey attacking a parrot with a disrupted still life in the foreground, 2009. Pencil signed and dated along the lower right; numbered 23/65 along the lower left. Published by Paul Kasmin Editions, New York. From an edition of 65 along with 25 artist proofs. Inspired by the works of John James Audubon, Ford repositions the animals in his works into chaotic and violent scenes. His works are a commentary on the history of colonialism, slavery, and oppression. He also forms a commentary on the ways in which Audubon collected his specimens, often killing the creatures in order to draw them as alive.
