Many of his works remain classics of both English language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverly, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.  Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing  and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.

              A miniature painted enamel roundel, by William Bishop Ford (1832-1922), after Sir Edwin Landseer, RA (1802-1873), depicting the dog Grafton, a detail from the painting Dignity and Impudence, signed and dated 1867, diameter 3cms; in circular gilt metal pendant frame. Ford was born in London, 3rd May, 1832 and became a student of William Essex (1784-1869) Enamel Painter in Ordinary to Princess Augusta, Queen Victoria and HRH Prince Albert. A companion miniature of the terrier Scratch - the other dog portrayed in Landseer's painting, is known to have been executed by Ford.
