Paddy Wainburranga Fordham - Balangjalngalan (Spirit Figures), 1996

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Paddy Fordham was an artist, sculptor, storyteller, and leader of the Rembarnga people of South East Arnhem Land. He was famous for depictions of the Balangjangalang Spirits that dwell in the rocky escarpments and trees around Barunga. These spirits are said to love children and are liable to lead them away from their camp while their parent's attention is diverted. While these objects may impart great knowledge, power and wisdom to a child in their care, children are warned not to stray too far from camp, lest the Balangjangalang Spirit get them.

Paddy Wainburranga Fordham - Balangjalngalan (Spirit Figure), 1989

        Est: $2,800 - $3,200

During his lifetime, renowned artist, dancer, didgeridoo player, and storyteller Paddy Fordham Wainburranga embodied the living history of the people of Australia’s far north. He began working as a stockman while still a young man on many of the stations throughout the Top End. It was not until the 1970s when, settled at Maningrida, he began to carve and paint for the nascent Arts and Crafts Centre. The Balangjalnagalan depiction's and associated stories were his favourite theme. These ambiguous beings are responsible for ensuring that things in the human world go in accordance with the will of the Spirits. They are said to be half-human, half-spirit, with the power to transform at will. They are wise and provide guidance and healing, often appearing in the form of animals or birds. Having learned traditional bark painting from his father and being steeped in ancient stories, Paddy Fordham became the senior elder of the Rembarrnga people and divided his time between making artworks and leading the Rembarrnga in important ceremonial activities throughout the Northern Territory.

        Oct. 11, 2022

Paddy Wainburranga Fordham - Waditj and Bolong, c.1980

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Paddy Fordham was the leader of the Rembarnga people and an artist of great renown whose career was notable for a number of major episodic works. In these two paintings he depicts Bolong, the Rainbow Serpent and how Waditj - the Rock man, turned into stone. The image of Bolong explains how Indigenous society is divided into two separate moieties and a number of different skin groups. In the episodic bark that accompanies it, Waditj is shown living with his clan in the Wybalk country. He was a devil man - very cruel and greedy. One day he decided to fulfil his desire to create more havoc in the world. He told his people that he was leaving to see what he could take from the neighbouring tribes. On his journey Waditj came to a billabong and could hear songs from the Wagilag Sisters Dreaming being sung by people of the Ngalbon clan. As he got closer he began to feel heavy and found it hard to move. Black stone-like lumps began growing all over his body. Rembarnga people say that Waditj was punished for his evil and was turned into a rock by the Bolong (Rainbow Serpent), the most powerful spirit of all.

Paddy Wainburranga Fordham - Mimih Spirit

        Est: $1,800 - $2,500

As a youth, Paddy spent much of his time hunting and learning culture and customs from his father and uncles. He was taken to sacred locations, where he was initiated into the Law. He later worked as a stockman for 20 years. Steeped in ancient stories from a young age, Paddy learned traditional bark painting from his father. Paddy Fordham's innovative talent won him quick recognition soon after he began painting. In time, he became the senior elder of the Rembarrnga people and divided his time between making artworks and leading the Rembarrnga in important ceremonial activities throughout the Northern Territory. Paddy's unique depiction of the Mimi(h) Spirit was the centre piece for many of his paintings. He often painted a dancing Mimi(h) Man, who looks over the land as a protector and only comes out at night. The Mimi is not visible during the day. Another favourite theme was depiction and stories associated with Balangalngalang. These ambiguous beings are responsible for seeing that things in the human world go in accordance with the will of the spirits. Mimi(h) Spirits are believed to have been responsible for teaching aspects of the Law that governs the conduct and morality of the Arnhem Land clans.

During this time he was taken to sacred locations, told many Dreamtime stories and learned traditional customs and how they are practiced. Paddy was renowned for carving representations of Balangjalngalan spirits. They are spirit guardians whose mission is to make certain that humans live in alignment with the will of the ancestors. Balangjalngalans sometimes disguise themselves as trees. They are known to capture babies who are left alone and alienate them from their parents. Private Collection, NSW Cooee Art, NSW

They are said to be half-human, half-spirit, with the power to transform at will. They are wise and provide guidance and healing, often appearing in the form of animals or birds, but generally living as humans, and sometimes taking the role of witch doctor. However, they have been known at times to abduct unattended babies or straying children as a means of recruiting new members and can become quite strict when customs are not faithfully observed. So, like all other-worldly powers, they have a frightening aspect and must be heeded with great respect. They are spirits that are woven into the kinship system as inextricable links in a holistic cosmology. Having learned traditional bark painting from his father and being steeped in ancient stories, Paddy Fordham's innovative talent won him quick recognition.
