      Edwin Forrest ALS "I entertain but little hope of a successful engagement" A 1p autograph letter signed, 8” x 5”, by American Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest, signed “Edwin Forrest”. Written in New Orleans, on January 12, 1868. With expected folds from mailing, else clean, crisp, and near fine. The letter reads: "Dear Friend Oakes, Your letter of 1st inst. was duly received, and I thank you for your kind and hearty greetings. A happy new year to you and to all those whom you love on earth. I begin tomorrow night, but from the depressed condition of trade and commerce here I entertain but little hope of a successful engagement. My health is good. May God Bless you always, Edwin Forrest" Edwin Forrest was a prominent nineteenth-century American Shakespearean actor. His feud with the British actor William Macready was the cause of the deadly Astor Place Riot of 1849.       Edwin Forrest (March 9, 1806 – December 12, 1872); most prominent 19th century American Shakespearean Actor; A sheet of pine wood cut from the pine tree at his home, Springbrook, near Philadelphia framed together with a story about the tree by Charles J. Fyffe and original photographs of Edwin Forrest (CDV albumen) and the house (silver print) all framed together; also with a period miniature oil painting of Edwin Forrest on board. Height of frame for assorted memorabilia 11 1/2 inches (29.5 cm.). Provenance: Originally sold to benefit the Forrest Home for Retired Actors in Philadelphia, 1876.
