Robert Atkinson Fox Original Oil Painting

Robert Atkinson Fox signed oil painting on canvas. Signed lower right. Measures 14 x 17 inches image size and 21.5 x 24.5 inches framed. This painting is in very good condition with craquelure. There is no evidence of repairs or inpainting. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Jul. 16, 2022

          ROBERT ATKINSON FOX (CANADIAN/AMERICAN, 1860-1935)

          Est: $200 - $400

ROBERT ATKINSON FOX Canadian/American, 1860-1935 Oil on canvas Signed to verso with notation: "R. A. Fox / J.A. Fraser Jr. / 1887 / St. Louis". Portrait bust of gentleman in wire-rimmed glasses - possibly a portrait of John Arthur Fraser (Canadian, 1838-1898), a fellow artist in Canada and America from the period, who would have been forty-nine at the time of the piece. In fine gilt frame. While it is not explicitly clear whether this was a collaborative piece or a direct portrait of Fraser, the dual signature lines up with other portrait work found 1885-1887 signed in the same manner - which suggests Fox may have been working under or in conjunction with Fraser during this period.

Robert Atkinson Fox, In the Valley of Enchantment

          Est: $100 - $200

Born Robert Atkinson Fox on December 11, 1860 in Toronto, Canada, Fox studied in Canada and Europe prior to arriving in America. He eventually went on to become one of the early 20th century’s most popular, most diverse, and most reproduced artists of his time with his work appearing as art prints, calendars, advertising pieces, ink blotters, candy and handkerchief boxes, jewelry boxes, magazine covers, children’s books, newspaper inserts, postcards, thermometers, and a myriad of other forms. Once considered the step-child of Maxfield Parrish collectors, Fox collecting has blossomed into one of the most interesting and challenging forms of any early 20th century collectible. It’s true that many collectors gravitated to Fox collecting after the price level of Maxfield Parrish collectibles began to increase beyond the levels of many collectors. And it’s also true that R. Atkinson Fox was at times called a “Parrish imitator” because of the similarities of many of his most popular works. Yet many other artists of the time also attempted to capitalize upon the idyllic and romantic style popularized by Maxfield Parrish in their attempt to give the public what they wanted. However, few other artists of his time went on to provide the volume of work and diversity of subject matter as R. Atkinson Fox. During his lifetime Fox produced more than 1,000 works of art. Rather than concentrating upon one or two specialty areas as did so many artists of his time, Fox was a generalist. He could paint basically any assignment given to him by a publisher, usually painting from a photograph or from memory. His subjects included enchanted gardens, landscapes, countryside's, cottages, animals and pets (Fox was generally regarded as a leading painter of cows); lovely women, Indians and Indian maidens, the wild west, historical and contemporary themes, hunting and fishing scenes, adventure, ships, and much more. It is this diverse subject matter that makes Fox prints so appealing to so many collectors.

Robert Bateman's "Fox Crossing" Limited Edition Canvas

          Est: $595 - $695

Robert Bateman's "Fox Crossing" limited edition canvas signed and numbered Artist Proof 21/36 AP. This canvas is in mint condition and has never been framed. "This is a portrait of a particular fox. Although all foxes are perky and elegant, this one was especially so, leading me to believe that it must be a female. She was unusually tame, adopting a certain household in the forest of northern British Columbia, which she visited for cat food. She was also especially pretty with her multicolored coat. Although she was a red fox, this colour form is known as a cross fox. There is a dispute about whether the name comes from the idea that this form is a cross between a red fox and a black or silver fox, or whether it is because the dark area down the back and across the shoulders forms the sign of a cross. The former theory cannot really apply because there is no evidence that mates of a different colour are needed to produce a cross fox. In fact, although red is by far the most common form, a cross or black fox can pop up at any time in a litter of red foxes. I featured the luxuriant tail, a very important asset to all foxes. This one is graced with a superb and abundant appendage. The tail, when wrapped around a sleeping fox's face and paws, becomes a muff and comforter with great insulation properties, but is easy to breathe through." - Robert Bateman
