    Jesse Leach France (American, 1862 - 1926) , "Boats at Rest, " watercolor on paper, signed lower left, measures 14 x 20 inches to the matt edge, 25 x 32 inches framed. CONDITION: Good. Painter and teacher Jesse France was born in Ohio, and lived and painted along the eastern seaboard in New York City, New Haven, CT and on Higgins Beach, Maine. After studying art at the Academie Julian in Paris under Boulanger, Lefebvre and Constant, he received private schooling from noted painter Carolus Duran. France and his wife, Eurilda Loomis France, painted together in Europe from 1885 until the early 1890s before returning to New York. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salons in 1887, 1888 and 1890, as well as at the Art Institute of Chicago and National Academy of Design. He was also a member of the Philadelphia Artists Alliance and the Buffalo Society of Artists.
