Baldassare Franceschini, called Il Volterrano, Young man reading on a chair

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

This fine red chalk drawing, which appears to have been drawn spontaneously from nature, shows the characteristic features of Baldassare Franceschini's drawing style, in particular that of the many preparatory drawings for his first major commission, the frescoes for the Medici Villa La Petraia. Baldassare Franceschini was one of the most unique personalities of the Florentine Seicento and a tireless advocate of drawing, which he regarded as the basis of every art form. He was trained in Florence in the workshop of Matteo Rosselli and Giovanni da San Giovanni. After an initial apprenticeship in his home town of Volterra, he gained recognition as a skilful fresco painter and received the full support of the Medici family and other aristocratic patrons.

A. Grassi, in Volterrano. M.C. Fabbri, A. Baldassarre Franceschini, called il Volterrano

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

(Volterra 1611–1689 Florence) Ecce Homo, oil on canvas, 58 x 48 cm, framed Provenance: Private European collection We are grateful to Alessandro Grassi for endorsing the attribution of the present painting after examination in the original.. The present composition relates to work attributed to Baldassare Franceschini, il Volterrano in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (inv. no. 00642018). The present work can be compared with Volterrano’s paintings from the mid-1650s, including the altarpiece of Santa Chiara in the Pinacoteca Civica in Volterra and the Perseus now in Schlessheim's Staatsgalerie. The face of this suffering Christ is also reminiscent of Franceschini's early work: the detached fresco with Venus and Cupid in the Bardini Museum in Florence, or figures in the Cosimo II receiving the winners of Bona painted in fresco in the courtyard of the Villa Petraia. This type of composition was particularly appreciated and is known with variations including one that belonged to Ferdinando de' Medici, now in the Galleria Palatina in Florence (see M.C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli, Volterrano. Baldassarre Franceschini 1611–1690, Florence 2013, p. 359, nos. OP 58 and OP 59; on this topic see also M. Chiarini, Gli Ecce Homo di Baldassarre Franceschini, il Volterrano, in “Arte Cristiana”, vol. 73, 1985, pp. 195–199). Initially trained in the studio of his father, the sculptor Gaspare, Baldassarre Franceschini moved to Florence at the age of sixteen to work as an assistant to Matteo Rosselli. His first major commission was the frescoes in Villa Petraia, ordered by Lorenzo de' Medici in 1636 and finished twelve years later. In 1652 the Marquis Filippo Niccolini financed the artist a study trip to the main Italian artistic centres, allowing him to get to know the painting schools of Parma and Bologna and to come into contact in Rome with Pietro da Cortona, who left a lasting impression on his style. The patronage of the Medici and other important families of their circle made Franceschini one of the most successful painters of the Baroque era in Florence, renowned above all for his frescoes and paintings of religious and allegorical subjects.

Nonziata di Firenze l’Anno 1729, Florence 1729, p. 45 (as Volterrano); possibly E. Borroni Salvadori, Le esposizioni d’arte a Firenze dal 1674 al 1767, Florence 1974, p. 133 (as Volterrano) We are grateful to Sandro Bellesi for suggesting the attribution and for his help in cataloguing this lot. The present Saint Michael the Archangel is identified by his armour and his attributes of the sword and the shield, emblematic of his role as a Christian warrior saint, traditionally represented fighting a dragon, the symbol of evil (Apocalypse 12: 7-9). The Archangel, who with his absorbed expression gazes outward beyond the observer, is depicted in shining armour, partially covered by a large deep red mantle; he holds his sword aloft in his right hand. It is possible that the present painting can be identified as the one painted by Franceschini in circa 1658 for Luca Franceschi of Florence and exhibited in the cloisters of Santa Maria Annunziata, Florence in 1729, when it was in the Franceschi Antinori collection, (see E. Borroni Salvadori in literature and M. C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli [eds.], Volterrano. Baldassarre Franceschini [1611–1690], Florence 2013, p. 354 cat. no. OP 35). The present painting relates to a similar composition of Saint Michael the Archangel executed by Franceschini between circa 1652 and 1653 for the della Gherardesca family and today conserved in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Nancy (inv. no. 22, and M. C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli [eds.], ibid., pp. 175–176, cat. no. 42). In the present painting, as in the Nancy canvas, the same masterful rendering of the features can be observed, together with highlights playing across the saint’s metal armour and on the folds of the magnificent deep red mantle he wears. Both the sword and the shield held by Saint Michael appear to be similar, although these attributes have been painted in differing positions in the two compositions. The present painting can also be compared to other paintings executed by Franceschini around 1657 to 1658, among these the Perseus with the head of Medusa and the Venus and Cupid (for which see M. C. Fabbri, A. Grassi, R. Spinelli [eds.], ibid., pp. 222–225). Baldassare Franceschini, called il Volterrano, was the son of the sculptor, Giuseppe Franceschini. He was introduced to painting by his father and later apprenticed in Volterra to the Florentine Cosimo Daddi (active during the second half of the sixteenth century, Florence – 1630, Volterra). During this period he attracted the attention of his first protectors, the Guarnacci and above all the Inghirami, families. Thanks to whom (particularly to Giulio Inghirami, who was secretary to the Grand Duchess Cristina of Lorrain) he was able to move to Florence and enter the studio of Matteo Rosselli (1578–1650). Through Rosselli he knew Giovanni Mannozzi, called Giovanni da San Giovanni (1592–1636) with whom he collaborated on several works which received acclaim, especially from various members of the Medici, and in particular from Don Lorenzo, the youngest son of Grand Duke Ferdinand I. Indeed, the Medici prince entrusted Franceschini with his first important official commission: the fresco cycle celebrating the principal acts of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany in the Villa della Petraia, which was started in 1636 and completed in 1648.

The present sheet may indeed be an initial compositional sketch for a putto in the over-door of a fresco in the Palazzo Della Gherardesca in Florence (see Antichita Viva, Anno XXXII, no. 6, Nov-Dec., 1993). In 1973, Ewald Gerhard noted that Volterrano worked on several occasions for the Della Gheradesca family.

The drawings on both sides of this sheet are preparatory studies for two different figures in Volterrano's fresco of Francesco Medici receiving homage from the Florentines, part of the decoration of the courtyard at Villa Petraia, near Florence. Volterrano's commission from Don Lorenzo de Medici stipulated he paint two groups of frescoes beneath the twin loggias of the villa's internal courtyard between 1636 and 1648. The many drawings related to the commission demonstrated that Volterrano prepared every scene with great care; each figure was first studied in the nude, and then clothed. The recto relates quite closely to the figures of the soldier wearing armor in the left foreground of the scene. The verso is a study for the dignitary climbing towards the seated figure of Francesco Medici to the right of the fresco composition. This lot is accompanied by a framed giclee of the drawing on the reverse of the sheet. HID01801242017

ALEXANDER DER GROSSE BEI DEM PHILOSOPHEN ARISTOTELES Öl auf Leinwand. 114 x 166 cm. (931344) Baldassare Franceschini, 1611 - 1689, attributed/ circle of ALEXANDER THE GREAT VISITING THE PHILOSOPHER ARISTOTLE Oil on canvas. 114 x 166 cm.
