FRANCKLIN, WILLIAM. 1763-1839. Military Memoirs of Mr. George Thomas, who, by extraordinary talents and enterprize, rose, from an obscure station to the rank of a general, in the service of the native powers in the North West of India. Calcutta: Printed for the Author at the Hurkaru Press, 1803. First edition, 4to, contemporary boards with swirl pattern, title to paper label on spine, frontispiece portrait of author, one large folding aquatint plate (illustrating the Qutb Minar in Delhi) and one folding map with hand coloring ('Sketch of the Country North West of Delhi', dated 1802, made by Francklin based on materials supplied by Thomas), printed with large margins, subscriber list at the beginning, errata sheet at the end with 'Addenda to the Errata' slip tipped in. Edge wear and slight fraying to boards and at top of spine, previous owner's inscription on ffep, early reader's annotations on page 1, early newspaper clippings tipped to a table of contents page. George Thomas (Seoirse O Tomais), c. 1756-1802, was an Irish-born mercenary who served in India and ultimately became the ruler of a small kingdom in what is now the state of Haryana. He was known as 'the Raja from Tipperary.' This first edition of Francklin's account, 'compiled and arranged from Mr. Thomas's original documents,' printed in India, is very scarce.
